Colorado Rockies out-choke Dodgers in 12-10 loss

Flesch-Law-Recap-Denver – The Colorado Rockies blew it. Their remarkable retort from down 7-1 was all for naught. They went into the ninth with the lead and left the ballpark with a loss, downed by the Dodgers 12-10.

Mark Sanchez wasn’t the only offensive weapon that couldn’t capitalize at Coors Field on Sunday. The Rockies offense did score 10 runs, but their efficiently lacked as they stranded 10 runners and notably couldn’t exploit a bases loaded with no outs situation in the sixth. They would then strand more runners in the seventh, amounting to only one run and five stranded baserunners in the two frames while the Rockies were on their way to coming back.
The Boys on blake didn’t bomb today, but they did small-ball their way into nine unanswered runs while Chris Rusin, Justin Miller and Boone Logan held the Dodgers on defense. Yet, the next man to pitch, Jake McGee couldn’t keep it going as he blew a three-run lead and the save in the ninth.
It was a disastrous start for the Rockies who had Jordan Lyles on the bump, he continued to struggle as he was only able to pitch two and two-thirds innings. The club’s already taxed pen was used plenty today. Lyles, who was on the mound for the Dodgers first seven runs and was responsible for five of them has struggled mightily this season.
“Not sure where to point the finger delivery-wise,” Lyles said. “But too many missed fastballs right off the plate and too many walks… unacceptable. It’s tough especially coming after the outing I had last time. But I thought Chris Rusin deserves a lot of credit for today, giving us a chance to comeback and we did. Our offense is top-notch.”
The offense which clawed back had three in the fourth, one in the sixth and five in the eighth. It was a full team effort as things like double steals, bunts, singles and walks got the Rockies on the board.
“We kept fighting,” Walt Weiss told. “We had an opportunity in the sixth, we didn’t get the big one there, but again we kept fighting and we broke though late but guys kept fighting. Puig made a huge catch on Barnes’ ball earlier in the game. A lot of things happened (in the game) it’s tough to remember.”
But the newly modeled Rockies bullpen looked more like the old Rockies bullpen as closer Jake McGee blew a 10-7 game and handed the Dodgers five on their way to a 12-10 win.
“Command, he’s a strike thrower,” Weiss responded to what went wrong for McGee. “The strikes that he did throw had a lot of plate, that was the one difference I saw with Jake today.”

TURNING POINT:

There were many (look below) but Jake McGee’s wild pitch, which brought home the tying run in Trayce Thompson to make it 10-10, was the major one.

PLAYER OF THE GAME:

Gerado Parra 

The Rockies left fielder had four hits in five at-bats including four RBI. His single in the eighth plated two, which at the time gave close Jake McGee three runs of insurance. It’s the most hits and RBI he’s had in a game in a Rockies uniform.

BY THE NUMBERS:

1 – Joc Pederson hit the game’s only home run, he went one-for-one with three walks and  two runs.

4- there were eight four-pitch walks in this contest.

5 – the amount of earned runs starter Jordan Lyles had, he’s allowed five earned in less than five innings in three of his four starts.

19 – the amount of walks in this game, combined for both teams.

WHAT’S AHEAD:

The Rockies continue a 20 game in 20 day stretch with a four-game series against Pittsburgh which begins Monday night.
