38 balls 20 strikes. Thats what it takes to get you sent down to the minors to work on your game. After Tyler Matzek’s latest start, the Rockies have decided he needs a tune up.
LHP Tyler Matzek has been optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque. In a corresponding move, C/INF Wilin Rosario has been recalled to the #Rockies.

Matzek is still 2-1 on the season with an ERA just over 4.00 but it was clear on Wednesday that something wasn’t right with the southpaw. I discussed this very possibility with Brandon Spano during his show on Thursday, you can find the audio here, the interview starts around the 29 minute mark.
To fill Matzek’s roster spot, the Rockies re-called C/INF Wilin Rosario. This is an interesting move as it first doesn’t fill Matzek’s spot in the rotation, and I would imagine Rosario would be more than just a bat to add for the weekend. I would find it hard to believe the Rockies would use two of Rosario’s minor league options in the first two months of the season, so if and when the club decides to call up a pitcher, I doubt Wilin will be sent back down.
The Rockies could also just move Christian Bergman back to the rotation in the interim, who has pitched well in a long relief role out of the bullpen.
