Today, the Colorado Rockies announced that they have hired Mike Redmond as the new bench coach. Redmond was a catcher for 13 years in MLB with the Marlins, Twins, and Indians before moving into a coaching career after retiring.
Redmond began his coaching career in the minor leagues of the Toronto Blue Jays system. From November 2012 to May 2015, he served as the manager of the Miami Marlins.
Redmond is most known for calling games when he was a catcher and general insight into pitching and game strategy. He will form a kind of coaching battery with Bud Black, the former pitcher, and new Rockies manager.
This should be especially encouraging to young and promising catchers, Tony Wolters and Tom Murphy.
The Rockies have now gone from a team just a few short years ago who hired a manager with zero MLB experience, to having one with several years experience not even as the guy in charge.
The upside, of course, is that the Rockies are just swimming in smart baseball people right now. The downside may be a kind of “too many cooks in the kitchen” effect. Getting all these smart and experienced (and potentially set in their ways?) men on the same page will be key for the Rockies contending in 2016.
