It doesn’t matter how the Colorado Rockies season ends.
Well, it does. But it also doesn’t.
Winning games is always better than losing games, especially in a sport where no single draft pick can swing your fortunes and won’t even appear in MLB for years to come.
And the boys in purple certainly haven’t been doing a lot of winning lately.
With eight contests left on the schedule and the chances they do anything more than maybe hit the over on the preseason predictions though, Rockies fans still deserve this final stretch to take a vacation from all the big questions surrounding the team and just enjoy a little bit of baseball.
There is really one big question that may be changed by the outcome of this season anyway; the future of Nolan Arenado.
But even that was already in flux and one could easily make the argument that even a very positive 60-game stretch wasn’t going to be a cure-all for Arenado’s relationship with the front office.
Whatever conversations are to take place with the team’s biggest superstar will remain roughly the same.
It is also true that the problem spots of the roster will remain the same. The questions about the bullpen and lineup depth aren’t going anywhere. Neither is the fact that for the first time in three years, the club will finally have some flexibility to make some moves.
But you don’t have to think about all that right now. We won’t have answers to any of these questions for at least a month, probably more, anyway.
It’s been a long, hard year and the times ahead are going to be bumpy. There is a chance the Rockies re-tool and come right back for a run with this team. There is a chance the blow it all up. Either way, it won’t be smooth sailing.
So for now, just enjoy the game you.
We had 10 months of offseason filled with a bitter showdown between MLB and the players. A winter of no baseball extended into July and now after just a few short weeks, it will be over. The game will be gone again.
It’s been an overwhelming year and season. And thinking about what happens next may be even more overwhelming. But we will have plenty of time for all of that in the future.
Take the time to enjoy the crack of the bat, the pop of the glove, the roar of the umpire, and the shouting of the exuberant players. Take the time to remember how and why you fell in love with the game in the first place. Because it’s never a guarantee that we get to have it at all.
Take the time to remember that, even when they make you pull your hair out and even question your own sanity, the Colorado Rockies are yours. They belong to you. Give yourself the gift of putting away the long-term anxiety of the future and sitting in the serenity of having your very own baseball team. Not everyone does.
So take the time to appreciate every Arenado web gem, every grind-it-out at-bat where Raimel Tapia finds some way to get on base, every next paragraph in the ongoing inspirational stories of Josh Fuentes and Daniel Bard, every step forward for Antonio Senzatela and every lesson learned for German Marquez, every highlight reel homer from Trevor Story, every time Charlie Blackmon smirks at father time, and every Kyle Freeland pitch that carries with it the fight of the heart of Denver.
