Colorado Rockies Defensive Play of the Week: Gerardo Parra is superman

It was the bottom of the ninth and the Colorado Rockies had just staged an epic comeback of massive proportions. They’d come into the series just a half-game back of the lead in the NL West and traded wins over the first two contests with the Arizona Diamondbacks who held that spot at the beginning of the week.

Coming back from down five at one point, and down two in the final inning, the Rockies offense (mostly Mark Reynolds) did their part setting the stage for Greg Holland to get the save. Holland allowed a rare baserunner and the Diamondbacks got the tying run to second base with one out. His perfect save streak, and more importantly, the game, hung in the balance when Chris Owings hit a line drive into left field.

Gerardo Parra, who had gone 0-for-4 at the plate with three strikeouts in this game, took flight:

Catches don’t get much more clutch than that. It swung the game and therefore the series.

Parra is hitting .268/.302/.402 on the season with three home runs and 12 RBI. Those numbers aren’t great but that RBI total places him fifth on the team and this play is just one example — OK, it’s the best example — of many impact plays he has made with his glove. Those powers combined equate out to a player that has been pivotal in helping the Rockies to a 9-0 record in one-run games.
