April 4th, Chase Field Phoenix, Arizona, Game 1: Rockies 10, Diamondbacks 5

GAME RUNDOWN

The Colorado Rockies defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 10-5 behind two big home runs from Trevor Story. Story became the first player to ever go yard twice in an Opening Day MLB debut and also showed off the leather with a spectacular diving catch. Anyone tuning in to see what this promising rookie can do got a glimpse of his very best, especially when you consider he did his damage against Zack Greinke, on of the best pitchers in the game a year ago.

Nolan Arenado added a three-run blast of his own in the eighth when it looked like the Rockies might let the game slip away with shaky work from Jorge De La Rosa in the fourth and fifth innings. The bullpen, however, was fantastic. Justin Miller, Boone Logan, Chad Qualls, and Miguel Castro combined to give up only four hits, while striking out four and walking one batter.

PLAY OF THE GAME

Story’s three-run home run in the third inning was the beginning of an era, the most definitive play in the game, and an uppercut to Zack Greinke from which he never recovered.

HIGHLIGHTS

TURNING POINT

The third inning was clearly the turning point in this game. The Rockies plated six runs, got a hit from the pitcher, saw Story’s history-making blast, and a classic Carlos Gonzalez laser-beam home run. One of the best pitchers in the game — who hadn’t given up seven runs until he had pitched over 30 innings in 2015 — wouldn’t last past the following inning, reaching that seven-run mark is just four frames in 2016.

LASTING IMPACT

It’s game one, but this will absolutely be a game Trevor Story never forgets.

WHAT’S NEXT

Tomorrow, Chad Bettis takes the hill against the Diamondbacks other shiny new offseason acquisition, Shelby Miller. Start time is 7:40 MST.
