The Colorado Rockies may be in discussions with their former relief pitcher-turned general manager Jerry Dipoto about a deal that would send Mark Trumbo to Coors Field.
Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports broke the news on Tuesday that the Rockies have had discussions about the first baseman/corner outfielder. The Rockies, after non-tendering Justin Morneau and outrighting Wilin Rosario to Triple-A and off of the 40-man roster after being non-tendered himself, are in the market for a power bat who can play first base.
In the 2015 season, Ben Paulsen looked good at first base, hitting 11 home runs, 19 doubles and driving in 49 runs for the Rockies in just 325 at-bats. However, the club may be interested in acquiring a right-handed bat to be able to platoon with the left-handed Paulsen.
Trumbo would be a great fit at Coors Field with the power that he possesses. However, he also fits the bill of what the Rockies have seemingly suggested that they would get away from, a free-swinging power hitter who doesn’t possess the ability to shorten his swing and get the ball in play when necessary, and more importantly, work counts and take a walk when needed.
The idea of Trumbo wearing purple pinstripes is probably something that doesn’t have any legs. This is the time in the offseason where general managers are floating players names around and having multiple discussions with other general managers to get a feel for the market. Trumbo, originally brought up with the Angels, was dealt by Dipoto when he was the general manager there. It seems that Dipoto doesn’t find a liking in Trumbo’s game and is looking to move him before the non-tender deadline on Friday.
For the Rockies, a guy like Trumbo could cost them in the neighborhood of $7 to $9 million on a one-year deal, certainly something that the Rockies would have to consider in a season where everyone but the club itself has labeled a rebuilding year.
