DENVER — In the bottom of the fifth inning of Tuesday night’s contest against the St. Louis Cardinals, Colorado Rockies outfielder Charlie Blackmon hit a solo home run off of likely-future-hall-of-famer Adam Wainwright, driving in his 75th run of 2016.
This breaks the all-time Rockies franchise record set by Eric Young in 1996.
Blackmon has had a career year, which is to say he has had a year that a lot of guys would love to someday have in their career. He’s slashing .321/.381/.556 which is good for a 131 wRC+, or 31 percent better than league average. He has set career highs with 28 home runs and 75 RBI … so far.
That he has done all this out of the lead-off spot while playing the most difficult center field in baseball exceptionally well only adds to the impressiveness of these numbers.
