The early part of the schedule for the Colorado Avalanche has featured multiple emotional reunions with members of last year’s Stanley Cup Championship team, and we got one more tonight before the team heads out on the road for more than three weeks. Andre Burakovsky made his first return trip to Ball Arena after signing with the Seattle Kraken in...

Michael Porter Jr. – B For most players on the Denver Nuggets roster, urgency is the keyword in any critique of their season opener Wednesday night. They played with virtually none, but MPJ was one of the exceptions, as he often is in almost any context. Utah’s Lauri Markkanen attacked him in the first quarter and found success, but Porter was game for the challenge and settled into a stable performance. He gambled for some ill-advised steals but found his footing defensively and fought hard on the glass. Porter scored 15 points on 50% from 2 and 50% from 3 and was responsible for only one horrid possession. He even dove on the floor to force a jump ball. Porter…

Despite a 2-1 record after the first three games, and the advantage of playing on home ice, Jared Bednar and the Colorado Avalanche were looking for a shake-up in the bottom six as they welcomed in the Winnipeg Jets for the second game of the season within the confines of Ball Arena. Three players were called up, (Martin Kaut, Anton...

On June 13th, the Colorado Avalanche announced that 29-year-old centerman Lukas Sedlak has joined the organization on a one-year deal. The Czechia native spent the last three seasons in the KHL with the Traktor Chelyabinsk. Before that, he played three seasons with the Columbus Blue Jackets and three prior with their AHL affiliate. In his time in the KHL, he notched 121 points through 164 games. He was drafted by Columbus 158th overall in the 6th round of the 2011 draft. His start in the AHL coincided with Jared Bednar’s leadership behind the Springfield Falcons’ bench. In the 2015-16 season, Bednar was promoted to head coach and Columbus shifted their affiliation to the Lake Erie Monsters in Cleveland. That year,…

Colorado will have just three whacks at Minnesota in the regular season, and the first of three kicked off tonight. A familiar divisional foe, Minnesota has been a (mild) thorn in Colorado’s side; the Avs went 2-1-1 against them last year. Minnesota was wounded coming out of the gate. Poor goaltending performances weakened them and their forward group has missed the services of left wing Jordan Greenway. Ryan Hartman has struggled to fill the role of 1C and as a result, this Minnesota group was in a vulnerable position.  The uncertainty surrounding the health of forwards Darren Helm and Gabriel Landeskog has paved way for a lineup that has been described as fluid in the bottom six. Colorado rolled with…

The storyline for tonight’s game is there. Two Western conference juggernauts. Head of the Pacific Division and the leaders of the Central meet again after a historic offseason. The reigning Stanley Cup Champions and the host of a blockbuster trade filled with big-name acquisitions, departures, and Nazem Kadri’s free-agency landing place. Have I oversold it? Maybe. It came on the...

Bowen Byram – B- A bit of a nondescript start for Byram, coming off a massive postseason. Didn’t really create a ton offensively but didn’t give up much of anything defensively, although he did drift a little too far to the right on the Blackhawks’ second goal. The 3D power play is…interesting, but he had some moments along the right...

How are we back here already? I’ve always hated the phrase “feels like it was just yesterday”, so I’m not going to say that, but it was almost surreal being back inside Ball Arena so soon for a Colorado Avalanche game that actually mattered. Yes, the game technically did matter in terms of it being Regular Season game #1, but...
