Bye bye Julius: Elway says Virgil Green is Broncos rock

We’re as tired of writing about Julius Thomas as you probably are reading it. With that said, here’s another story on Julius Thomas. Well, kind of.

Broncos VP of football operations and general manager John Elway is high on one of the Broncos free agent tight ends, and no, it’s not Julius Thomas. Elway recently told a local blogger “We like Virgil a lot, He is a big part of what we do. He is kind of our rock.”

Elway seems to be making himself clear about which tight end he’s interested in keeping once free agency opens on March 10th.

This comes a week after our report of Julius Thomas turning down a huge deal from the Broncos, and then the stemming comments from Julius’ father showing how far apart the two sides are.

With potentially re-signing Green, it gives the Broncos a guy who is committed to run blocking and pass protection before anything else. This is not only a scheme that Denver switched to late last year with Peyton Manning’s injury, and the emergence of CJ Anderson, but also what new Broncos coach Gary Kubiak prefers in his tight ends.

Denver may be in the market for one or two more tight ends to go along with Green. The Broncos will likely try to re-sign Peyton’s longtime teammate Jacob Tamme for depth, and they may look at other options as well.
