In the 36th edition of the BSN Denver Colorado Buffaloes podcast Ryan Koenigsberg, Allie Monroy Will Whelan and Jake Shapiro discuss all the latest news from the Colorado Buffaloes.
Headlining the show, the group reviews Colorado’s big-time win over Oregon in Eugene. Allie talks about what Boulder was like Saturday, RK and Shap were in Denver while Will was at wedding, hear how all the experiences were centered around CU’s win.
Next they all get into reviewing the game and their praise for Steven Montez lands them in an interesting spot. Could the redshirt freshman take Sefo Liufau’s job? The group discusses and RK thinks it’s something the team is discussing as well.

I’m so proud of Shap. Not only for nailing the pronunciation of ales, but also for coming out and changing his prediction from 4-8 to 7-5 instead of just saying he is more confident in the Buffs’ ability to win 4 games. My prediction at the beginning of the season was 7-5 and that included a loss to Oregon, so I’m going to bump mine up to 8-4 now. I also saw us losing to Arizona, and right now I don’t think Arizona is any good. I only watched them against Grambling St. so far this year, and they were +6 in the turnover differential in that game and still only won by 10.
As for attendance on Saturday, I’m skeptical that the students show up in force, simply because they couldn’t fill Coors when the basketball team was performing at a similar level (just outside of the top 25-ish). I’m hoping they prove me wrong, and there’s certainly more avid student fans now than before, but I don’t think the fringe students (the ones needed to pack the student section) show up until a month after we keep winning.
re: Sefo/Montez
The one thing I hope fans don’t do, but I’m sure they will, is if Montez beats Oregon St. on Saturday and then Sefo comes back and we lose @ USC, then everyone will pile all the blame onto Sefo’s back and label him as “the QB that just couldn’t get it done”. I don’t think that’s fair at all, and I really like Sefo, and I want him to get to experience a big win like Montez did last week.
Also, props to Sefo for being a leader on the sidelines last week. He was jumping up and down in excitement for Montez, and you could see him trying to calm down Montez after the INTs. That’s invaluable and I imagine a lot of QBs would be resentful and wouldn’t have done anything to help the team win.
Final takeaway that I’m probably reading more into than I should: In the second episode of The Rise, there was a clip of the players walking out of the tunnel @ Michigan. One player was standing and facing the opposite direction, hugging and high-fiving everyone before the game started, and that was Sefo. That’s something leaders do, and I think this team believes in Sefo. Not that they don’t believe in Montez, because I think they do, but I think there’s an intangible quality to Sefo’s place on this team that you just can’t recreate unless you see someone overcome all that he has overcome.
