Deion Sanders is sticking with Isaac Wilson as Colorado’s starting QB after the bye week.
The Buffs (2-3) host No. 11 Utah, Wilson’s former team, on Saturday looking to avoid a four-game losing streak. Coach Prime believes Wilson is the right guy for the time being despite throwing three INTs in his first start at Colorado.
“Isaac is always up to the test,” Deion Sanders said Tuesday. “This isn’t any different. Isaac is the same Isaac, man. He doesn’t don’t flinch.
“He doesn’t place blame. He is what he is.”
Wilson took over the reins from Julian Lewis at halftime of the Big 12 opener vs. Baylor. The Utah transfer provided a spark in the second half of that game and on the first drive of his first start the following week.
The Buffs went on a nine-play, 75-yard TD drive engineered by Wilson to open up the Texas Tech game, but things went downhill after that. Wilson finished the game completing just 59% of his passes for 290 yards to go along with a TD and three INTs.
“We have one glaring problem,” Deion Sanders said after the game. “You guys know what that is. Let’s stop the foolishness, man. We have one glaring problem.
“We have to play better at one position.”
Wilson played in 10 games (seven starts) for Utah and now will get the chance for revenge against his former team. He’s certainly willing to take chances (to a fault) but that should be mitigated by Colorado running the ball more than they did vs. Texas Tech.
Wilson dropped back to pass 55 times and threw 44 passes in his first start in nearly two years.
“We don’t want to throw the ball 40-plus times,” Deion Sanders said Tuesday. “We don’t want to get into that because we’re not great when we throw it that much.”
Isaac Wilson will have his hands full with the Utah’s defense which is the No. 1 scoring defense in the Big 12 this season. Julian Lewis and Kaneal Sweetwyne will back up Wilson on Saturday as Colorado tries to pull off a Top-25 upset.
“Isaac is the kind of guy, this really happened, I said make sure you throw the ball to our team,” Deion Sanders said Tuesday. “We can joke like that because Isaac is one of those kids, man. He ain’t taking that too hard. He’s not going to cry and have a pity party because that’s the balance of our relationship.
“We can get down like that. And then when he does something, yeah, ‘what you got to say now?’ That’s how Isaac gets down with me.
