As one of the original members of the C-Unit in 2004 and probably the one who tried to argue on Ralphie Report that the 41-20 loss to Arizona in 2013 wasn’t a blowout, I so appreciated this article. Thanks for chronicling the rise of the student section and attendance at Folsom. I still stop myself and think about the 2016 season, just to get a greater appreciation of what actually happened. I still don’t think I’ve truly enjoyed everything about that year.

The field rushes I have been a part of is another great way to show the decline and subsequent rise of the program:
My freshman year (2005) we beat csu on a Mason Crosby FG, I rushed because it was my first game as a student, even though as a lifelong fan, I thought rushing against csu was pretty embarrassing. Also, I was in the front row, and if I didn’t rush, I would have been trampled.
In 2006, we started the Hawkins era 0-6 and yet, some students rushed when we beat Texas Tech for our first win of the year. I abstained because I felt that rushing for a 1-6 team was more comical than anything else.
In 2007, I rushed when we beat Oklahoma. Little did I know I wouldn’t rush the field for another 10 years, and there were definitely times I thought I never would again.
In 2008, we beat West Virginia and people rushed, but I did not. I had a holier than thou approach to CU football fandom and was encouraging others not to rush so as to improve our legitimacy as a student section that might “act like we’ve been there before”.
In 2009, I think we hit the low point for field rushing when we upset Texas A&M for our 3rd win of the year, to which fans wore powder blue as a statement that we were as bad as we were back in the Fairbanks era. (Little did they know what was coming in 2012) I actually was a part of a movement to discourage people from wearing powder blue the week of that game as I thought it was insulting to the players. It was incredibly ironic when there were multiple students rushing the field after the game wearing powder blue. Disgraceful and definitely the low point for field rushing.
(Also in 2009, csu beat the Buffs in Folsom, and the ram fans rushed our field. I had a number of friends that wanted to counter-rush and go fight the csu fans. That was the worst.)
In 2010, people rushed when we beat Georgia, even though they were 1-3 and unranked. (Also, I watched AJ Green make the best catch I’ve ever seen in person in that game)
In 2011, we rushed against a 2-win Arizona team. That was also a low point, but at that point I remember talk of “we rush whenever we get a win” so I abandoned all hope of the student section acting like they’d been there before.
I don’t believe there were any field rushes in 2012-15, nor should there have been.
In 2016, I rushed when we beat Utah and I remember thinking “this is what it felt like when I rushed after we beat OU, except this is so much better.”

The highs and lows of a CU fan are probably much greater than that of a fan of any other team, that’s for sure.

I checked the Ralphie Report gamethread for that Zona game. You weren’t the one arguing it wasn’t a blowout, but you did comment in it!
I didn’t know they rushed that A&M game in 09. That’s…dang. I was an 11 year-old (sorry) in the student section for the 2006 Texas Tech game and thought rushing the field was a ton of fun. I was kinda holier than thou about ASU and Washington State this year, but I was too happy to really care. I was just relieved they didn’t do it against UCLA.
I don’t think there were any field rushes between 1989 and 2001, but I would have to ask someone who was there to verify. I’d love to get back to that point, though I’d be more than fine with rushing the field if they beat Washington or USC this year.

Yeah rushing against those two would be the only acceptable rush this year in my opinion. I know the students long for it, but at some point rushing against lesser opponents taints the experience. Go Buffs!
