Buffs Signee Evan Battey on Tad Boyle: "He over-appreciated the person that I am"

BOULDER- This year’s Colorado Buffaloes basketball team has had a tough stretch recently, but the future still looks bright. The Buffaloes have filled all three of their open scholarships with commits from three uniquely talented basketball players. One of those is three-star or four-star (depending on who you ask) power forward Evan Battey.

The Buffs have struggled this season in a lot of areas but especially with scoring in the paint. Battey has a 6-foot-7, 280-pound frame and should be a great addition on the interior. He’s surprisingly athletic for his size too, just look at this dunk below:

The signee from Villa Park High School, which is just outside of Anaheim, CA, Battey recently took a trip to Boulder to watch CU take on the southern California Pac-12 schools.

“My weekend is going well,” Battey said while he was on his visit. “I came out here to watch UCLA and USC because they’re obviously home teams of mine. It’s been a great experience; the energy, the environment at the games have been unbelievable.”

Battey will add much-needed size to the CU hoops roster but he also has a dimension that you don’t see a whole lot from players with his body frame. Battey likes to have the ball in his hands and has point guard caliber dribbling ability, in fact he likes to compare himself to Draymond Green.

The multi-dimensional big man makes it appear like he found the perfect fit in Boulder.

“You know the college town of Boulder is unbelievable. The coaches are great, I love the players–I know all of them.” Battey said.

It really seems like everything fell into place for the So Cal product when it came down to finding his new home for the next four years. He has already formed a strong relationship with head coach Tad Boyle.

“The thing that I love about Tad Boyle the most is that he didn’t just fall in love with the player I am,” Battey explained. “He over-appreciated the person that I am.”

Battey has a bright personality as well, he displays that on his Twitter account @EBDeuce4. It’s easy to see why Boyle was so enthralled at the idea of bringing the skilled big man to Boulder. While the Buffaloes might be having an off year on the court, with Battey, D’Shawn Schwartz and Tyler Bey set to join the team in the fall the future of the CU basketball team remains bright under Boyle.
