The reason Belichick started deferring when he wins the toss was because he analyzed how many possessions teams get in total and found that they would typically end the first half with the ball and then get it again at the beginning of the second half when they didn’t get the first kickoff. That proved to be a big advantage for the entire game. The Broncos have not scored on the first possession very often so it probably doesn’t present an advantage either way. It didn’t help them on Monday since the offense didn’t change field position much before they punted. The defense allowed the big run by Gordon in the first play so it looked like a mistake but they stiffened and got the ball back about the same place as they left it. The outcome probably points to deferring.

I think the other thing that Belichick does that more teams should adopt is to NEVER let your foot off the gas. Offenses get into a rhythm and then they go super conservative which ruins the rhythm. The Broncos stopped attacking and made the game close. Play your offense the entire game like the score is 0-0 and you will win a lot of games.
