Brock Osweiler did not want to be a Denver Bronco. Even if they matched the Houston Texans’ free-agent offer.
BSN Denver was the first to break the original $39 million contract offer that the Broncos proposed to the young quarterback last week and soon found out that it wouldn’t be near enough. The Texans would offer Osweiler a 4-year, $64 million deal when the negotiating period started on Monday.
As much as Denver media wanted to pretend that a deal was near, Osweiler was never close to signing with Denver.
A Denver Broncos source involved in Osweiler negotiations told BSN Denver on Wednesday, “It was very clear that he did not want to be here.”
Osweiler was furious after getting benched in Week 17, and even though he handled himself professionally in front of the press, one teammate noticed a difference. “Brock took it in stride but you could tell it was (messing) with him. Even after the Super Bowl, you could tell he wasn’t real happy,” the player told BSN Denver.
“I mean, he got benched after C.J. (Anderson)’s fumble. I think there were some guys wondering what was going on, but at the end of the day Peyton came in so you really can’t question that.”
In other words, you don’t ask questions when a legend takes over the huddle. And interestingly enough, the inefficient, unfocused team that we had seen throughout the first half of that game turned into the methodical, focused, big-play team that we expected to start the contest.
They went on to beat San Diego 27-20, and many started questioning whether or not Brock Osweiler had the “it” factor talked about so commonly among NFL decision-makers.
The buzz around the facility that week was that Brock never secured that job. He never made the coaches believe he could be the leader of that team. He had a chance to lead, and he didn’t. He had a chance to make his teammates accountable, and he didn’t.
A source told BSN Denver that Osweiler’s agent, Jimmy Sexton, was upset about the quarterback getting benched and said Sexton later told Osweiler’s wife, “don’t worry, we’re gonna get him out of here,” shortly after the game.
Sexton delivered to the tune of four years and $72 million, with a trip to Houston, a few months later.
Texans owner Bob McNair told the Houston media: “Rick (Smith) said he was going to get him, and he did. I’ve got to give him a lot of credit. He did a heck of a job.”
But in hindsight, it didn’t take a heck of a job to get Osweiler because the quarterback had one foot out the door in Denver the entire time.
“We’ve stayed true to our philosophy of building a team with players who want to be Denver Broncos and want to be here. That’s been a successful approach for us,” Elway told Andrew Mason at the Broncos’ official team site.
“While we did offer a very competitive and fair long-term contract to Brock, we ultimately had to remain disciplined while continuing to assemble a roster that can compete for championships,” Elway added.
Lets face it, the Denver Broncos run an elite organization, where the quarterback will always be compared to John Elway and now Peyton Manning, and anything less than a Lombardi Trophy is reason to castigate. Osweiler had enough of the gigantic shadow, was finished with what he thought was unfair expectations and realized that these shoes ain’t for everybody.

So your saying he really had no Balls!
It’s not like he ever really tore it up. No reason to root against him, he helped Denver win, but he’ll be pedestrian in Houston.
First, he was only starter, because Manning was hurt. I don’t believe for a second they were ever going to fully take that position away from a legend. He didn’t get benched, he did his job as “backup” and when the starter was healthy, he went back to such. Second, he was inconsistent every game he played, only playing half a game at the level of a starter. Don’t get me wrong, I liked him and would have been cool if he stayed, but not for the money he thinks he’s worth. Denver can do without a QB who gets butt hurt easily when he thinks it’s all about him.
Can’t wait until we play the Texans at home this year. Von, Ware & the rest of Denver’s defense are going to pummel Brock into the ground, just like when they pounded Cam Newton silly in Super Bowl 2016.
I agree, he’s going to get his ass wore out!
Why do you dislike Brock so much?
The thing with Brock was that he was solid, but there was no wow factor. When I go back to the Tebow time there were plenty of things not to like, but his impact on players around him and his ability to carry the team in big moments was far superior to Brock
Bottom line……a few days ago their biggest priority was re-signing Brock, and due to bad cap management by the all-seeing genius god Elway, he could not compete against Houston’s bid and the God lost him. He blew it. Brock was the one clearly being groomed as the new leader of the team, but they blew it.
Sorry, but that is the bottom line. This team will not be the same next year. I don’t expect the defense to be as good either. There is a pattern with Phillips defenses…..Incredible the first year, then they always taper off the second year. Look up his history with the Texans and Cowboys.
I am expecting a wildcard exit.
People! All are wrong.
Broncos did try and worked to keep him of course!!! that was the talk all season, you all were there. Do you really think Brock O was upset he didn’t keep STARTING on week 17? REally? Who doesnt WANT to Play is not on the team. BTW: it was Payton who came in the game week16 second half and turned it around.. Leadership…. not by doing as muchas by example and atmospheric change! If Brady came back from injury, would Billycheck keep him on the sideline? If Romo came back (and he did) did they stay with their backup? If Wilson was hurt and came back to play ..would his earned spot be jepordized? WAKE THE F UP. Brock took the money! Its all about the money. DOUBLED HIS INCOME!!! good or not. Simply, If someone offered you 30 mill to quit your job or change jobs??? Your answer is? yeah. Thats what I thought. If it wasnt for incentives in playing and making it to the big game. Would it matter? Would the SBowl Matter? hmmmm Good luck Brock.. Remember. Texas D was not close to the top 10 last season. We have WADE!!!
Actually the Texans D was ranked third in the league last year.
osweiler has every right to be upset and im happy he burned the broncos!! lmao.. he was eventually going to take over when manning left that was the whole reason why elway brought him in to learn behind manning… he played well when manning was out…. manning was never back to par he was still hurt beat up simply just out gas… you think elway was guna have manning go out a champ on the bench!!?…hell NO!.. dont try to win it just manage the offense let the best D in the league win it for us…. and thats exactly what happened..its no secret manning had horrible stats…. brock shouldve started and the broncos know it. it all came down to sending off manning with a SB win on the field instead of on the bench…. how do you think that would look on mannings credentials when comparing all time QB greats… not to mention, little brother with 2 and big bro with 1?…… it was all set up….. this will come back to bite denver in the ass…. franchise von miller? wtf?!! better hope he doesnt go down with a major injury, just saying….hes an LB happens alot…unbelievable
