Describe Von Miller in three words.

How about—relentless pass rusher?

While the man has many passions and talents—both on and off the football field—those three words do a mighty fine job describing the type of player he is on the field.

Funny enough, those three simple words were used by one top prospect in the draft to describe himself.

“Relentless pass rusher,” Bradley Chubb said, when asked what he tells teams when they ask him why they should draft him.

At 6-foot-4, 269 pounds, Chubb was a defensive end in North Carolina State’s 4-3 defense. While his body type profiles nearly perfectly to stay in a 4-3 defensive scheme in the NFL, he also doesn’t believe it will be any issue to make the transition to a 3-4.

“I think I fit pretty well,” he said, talking about being a 3-4 outside linebacker. “If you watched my film throughout college you’ll see I stood up and dropped a lot as well. I not only pass rushed, I dropped and covered backs, covered tight ends. I wouldn’t be uncomfortable doing it.”

In fact, not only would Chubb not be uncomfortable making the transition, that position of standing up on the edge of the line is where he sees himself having the most success in the NFL. Projected to be a top-five pick in the draft—even as high as No. 2 overall—the soon-to-be NFL player set a lofty comparison for himself.

“I try to take Khalil Mack and Von Miller and put them into one person,” he said, describing what his style of game will be at the next level. “Khalil Mack’s a more powerful guy, probably the best long arm in the game right now. Von Miller’s the speed/finesse guy. Just try to put both those together, have some power moves, have some speed moves that I go to.”

Think Chubb was too high on himself when assessing the type of player he is? Well, Von himself wasn’t too far off on the evaluation of the youngster.

“He’s Khalil Mack and Von Miller put together (laughing),” Miller said, when asked what type of player Chubb is. “He is a great player. I would love to have him on my team. You don’t come across guys like that often. Having the No. 5 pick in the draft, I hope we don’t have a high pick like that for a while. If we could steal a player like that, I’m all for it.”

If Chubb can, in fact, be a perfect mix of Mack and Miller, he deserves to be the No. 1 overall pick. But since that won’t be known until many years after the draft, and with a run on quarterbacks expected early, there is a very realistic possibility the relentless pass rusher slips to the No. 5 overall pick held by the Denver Broncos.

“If I got to play with Von Miller that would be crazy,” Chubb said, when thinking about the opportunity to play alongside his idol. “He’s such a great player, such a dynamic player. Definitely could learn a lot from him.”

Although the Broncos have Miller, Shane Ray and Shaq Barrett at outside linebacker now, never rule John Elway out from taking an elite pass rusher.

Back in the day when Elway had a plethora of pass rushers on the team—Miller, Ray, Barrett and DeMarcus Ware—he admitted he would still consider picking another pass rusher with the team’s first-round pick.

Now, with Ware enjoying retirement, Ray coming off a season in which he missed half the games due to injury and Barrett only under contract for one more season, the possibility of Elway going pass rusher early in the draft—even as early as No. 5 overall—certainly can’t, and shouldn’t, be ruled out.

“In this game, it’s about getting after the quarterback, a lot of people that’s their main focus,” Chubb explained, as if taking the words out of Elway’s mouth. “It impacts the game tremendously. If a team doesn’t have a quarterback, they don’t really have anything. My job is to get after one of the best players on the field, one of the highest-paid players on the field. It changes the dynamic of the game.”

“You’ve seen the Super Bowl, sack-caused-fumble ends the game. Take it back to when the Broncos won [Super Bowl 50], Von Miller just going crazy in that game. Super Bowl MVP of that game. This position is such a premium in this league because you’re getting after one of the most important positions.”

There he goes, talking about Von again. But along with his admiration and desired to be a Von-caliber type of player, he sees eye-to-eye with No. 58.

When asked which quarterback he would most like to sack, Chubb’s eye’s lit up as he quickly said: “Of course I’m going to say Tom Brady. You sack Tom Brady then you’re doing something right.”

Just like Von, Chubb wants to take down the best. The only difference is Von has done it on the biggest stage; Chubb has only dreamed about it.

With no major needs existing for the Broncos as they enter the draft, Elway and Co. could stick to best player available. Depending on how high Chubb ranks on their big board, the young talent could very well see himself playing across from his idol in only a matter of months.
