WASHINGTON D.C. – It’s not every day you get to go to the White House, but for 90+ members of the Denver Broncos organization, it was that day today.
President Barack Obama continued his tradition of inviting champions of the sports world to the White House by hosting the Super Bowl Champion Denver Broncos on Monday.
The players, coaches, and staff arrived in D.C. Monday afternoon to take a tour of the most famous house in America. The team then spent some on the front lawn playing catch with members of the Wounded Warriors project before heading to the Rose Garden where Obama would make his remarks about their Championship Run.
Obama started with some carefully placed jokes about Brandon McManus being the MVP of the Broncos porous offense, to a jab about the Broncos defense not living up to his ’85 Chicago Bears, adding in that Emmanuel Sanders said he could join the team as a wide receiver as the team presented him with the cliche #44 uniform.
After all the laughs grew faint, Obama captured the essence of Broncos Country by addressing the ever felt absence of Broncos owner Pat Bowlen. The President eloquently summed in just a few words exactly what Mr. B strove to create.
“The Denver Broncos are more than just football,” Obama told us gathered in his backyard. “They’re a way of life.”
As I made my way to the White House Monday morning, I ran into many different groups of people in the ever so familiar Blue and Orange, just hoping to get a glimpse of the Presidental gathering. I asked an eagerly awaiting family if I could take a picture of them. They excitingly accepted and I snapped a shot of them in front of the historic landmark. I thanked them and we both went on with our day. I didn’t ask them where they were from or if they were in town for this event because in that moment it didn’t matter. They were from Broncos Country.
Gary Kubiak told me after the event, being honored at the White House is an opportunity of a lifetime. It was a great day not only for the Broncos organization but also for Broncos Country.
