Why are NFL teams investing 3 years in developing a rookie quarterback? If you look at the first 5 quarterbacks selected in each draft from 2016 to 2020. An average of 2 of 5 per year are deserving of 2nd contracts. If you draft one of the first 5 QBs selected in each draft you have a 40% chance of finding a QB deserving of a 2nd contract. Goff, Wentz, Mahomes, Watson, Baker, Allen, Jackson, Kyler, Burrow, and Herbert.
Of these 10 QBs:
1 regressed (Wentz), 1 didn’t take the next step in his development (Goff), and 1 took 3 years to develop (Allen).
The other 7 QBs had meaningful success in the first or second year. Why are teams of the mindset that they need to give a quarterback 3 years to develop?
Paxton got 3 years before they drafted Drew. Drew is going into his 4th year at quarterback. According to this data set in the last 5 years only 1 in 25 has needed 3 years to develop. Curious your thoughts…
P.S.
Both Allen and Kyler were drafted after the organization recognized a failed QB draft the previous year.
