According to my sources The Derrick decision by Deshawn has a little something to with him wanting to be more famous and well known than Jeter. There’s some buzz going around that he might even want to be the best Derrick to ever play for the Broncos. And before you all the besmirch the legacy of Derek Loville, (different spelling I know) remember that the dude has three rings – speaking of three rings, who will be the first ex Bronco on the circus ? Personally, I think it’s time for some Steve on DNVR – lumbaaaaaa

Gents,
It’s been a hot minute since I’ve commented or asked a question, but I listen to every podcast. Y’all kill it every time.
Of note, Mase should have won the pop tart challenge, fruit flavored pop tarts are always the superior choice. Call 911, Mase got robbed!
Now the football question: I’m seeing that Kyle Van Noy is probably going to be released by the Dolphins; how good is he in coverage, and could he be an ideal complimentary ILB (to Alexander Johnson) for us to go after in free agency? Would his asking price be cost prohibitive to George Paton?
As always DNVArmy Salute!

Fellas,

Have we all forgotten about Mike Purcell? I can’t remember the last time he was talked about on the pod. When he got hurt the run defense was in shambles at times. To me the Broncos need to find a guy that can rotate with him and help each other stay fresh during the season, as well as be an insurance option in case of another injury. Any soon to be free agents or draft picks that would fit that mold?

Fellas – a few quick thoughts and one question.

1. Mase was right, fruit pop-tarts are where it’s at.

2. I think I’ve solved the Von Miller problem… Now, I don’t mean to toot my own horn. BUT I was a pretttttty good pass rusher in high school…. I’d be MORE than willing to suit up in place of Von for a measley couple million dollars (willing to negotiate), which would save the Broncos tons of money!!!

…a few disclaimers… sure, I only played 3A Colorado ball. And, yes, I’m now over 30. But, still… I think I could be onto something. Anybody have George Peyton’s direct number? Put me in coach! LOL

3. My wife and I are looking to move back to CO from Mase’s beloved North Carolina and we’re working with DNVR’s own Mike and Virginia Chevalier to do so (shout out). Mase, I hear you… NC is great. But it doesn’t compare with CO and that’s why we’re excited to move home! Put some Breck-Brews on ice because we’re coming!

Finally…. a legit Broncos question… I’ve been reading a few things about Justin Strnad and his work getting ready to prepare for guys like Travis Kelce. Any insight into how much confidence we should have in Justin going into next year? I’m pumped at the idea of a LB who has coverage potential (especially with corner-back concerns), but have no real read on how much I should be expecting from him.

If vons restructure was a new contract that looked like this:
4 year/ 52 million
30 million guaranteed
Yr 1 cap hit: 16 million
Yr 2 cap hit: 14 million
Yr 3 cap hit: 12 million
Yr 4 cap hit: 10 million
First 2 years is basically same deal as JJ except with full guarantees.
If the broncos wanted to move on after 2 years, then there would be zero dead money and von could chase one last big one.
Would von accept this?
Would you guys accept this?

What’s up boys! If you were in charge of casting for reality shows, which Broncos players would you select for roles on these shows: America’s Got Talent, The Bachelor, Keeping up With the Kardashians, Survivor, and Shark Tank!

Hey guys. A quick clarification from my last comment. About A Smith being a border line guy. I just meant that he was bellow average until the 49ers built that team into a freightliner and towed the man into some better stats in the 7th year into his career. Just like how that built KC team gave Smith free next day air shipping into some superb stats lol. Anyway awesome back up imo.
Question: Knowing that Trey Lance is a project, just like we knew Drew was a project. Would u draft another Qb high after 17 simular starts from Lance?
I feel like if we don’t give Lock 3 years to develop and figure it out were going to be stuck in an endless cycle, wasting picks and effort. I think we should be slapping a number of years on every guy. And hold ourselves to it.
Thx guys have a good day

MY BOYS!
Hope y’all had a terrific Tuesday. Quick scenario for you today. Say the draft is tomorrow. No trades happen, going into the draft everything is exactly the same as it is right now. Who are the Broncos most likely to draft? Are they most likely to trade up, trade down? I personally think they stay right at 9 and pick Patrick Surtain. But let me know what you guys think! And as always, thank you for everything.
Much love,
Sebastian

I feel nothing when people talk about the Alex Smiths, Foles or other hedges. After the possibility we might get Watson I want nothing else. If we get to the trade deadline and Watson isn’t our QB I’ll be incredibly disappointed. I really thought Lock would blow up this year, I need some success, we need some success and I believe Lock will keep us in mediocrity

BTW, what a Madden game between Spano and RK. Spanos D stopping RK for the first half and then a batted pass on the line, turnover on return gives RK the win, down from 14-3 to winning 17-18. It was exciting AF.

Hey fellas,
Is there value to Von furthering and cementing his legend status in Denver? Yes he will be able to make more playing for a different team for a few years but what about life after football? I’m sure Broncos Country would come out in droves to eat at Miller’s steak house or buy a car at Von Miller Chevrolet. Countless sponsor and partnerships that could pay his bills long after a retirement. Definitely a long game play but something to think about.
Thanks for all you guys do!

March 3, 2021

hey guys!

i’m not usually the type of fan who wants every veteran player that gets cut to come to the broncos…..but kyle rudolph makes some sorta sense, right? there’s the obvious connection with george paton and pat shurmur who was his position coach and then OC over two years in minnesota, but it could make some for what the broncos want to do;

the broncos have shown some pre-draft interest in tommy tremble and landon rice. both tight ends that excel in blocking but can also provide some value in the pass game, so perhaps they’re intending to run more 2 TE sets moving forwards and would like that second tight end to be someone who could also catch passes consistently.

someone like rudolph would be a good fit because he can block and be a threat in the passing game, unlike the other tight ends on the roster who are one (albert o) or the other (vanett, beck). what do y’all think?

Wow. So many things to say. First, Zac and Mase, you guys don’t know who Smeagol is??! Have neither of you seen or read John Ronald Reuel Tolkien’s epic masterpiece: The Lord of the Rings??! My disappointment is immeasurable. I feel as betrayed as Frodo was when Boromir could not resist the power of the One Ring and attempted to take it from Frodo. T-Revitup Bronco, I will always back you up on any LOTR references you make.

On a much less upsetting note, I just finished Tales from the Denver Broncos Sideline over the weekend! I was very excited to read it, not just for the incredible amount of knowledge, but also for the ability to further support the first journalist I followed and the guy who first put the idea of sports journalism in my mind as a career which has led me to the journalism school at ASU. Go Sun Devils and go Mase! (and go Iceman and his family!)

I get it – but Houston seems to be completely dug in. We’re talking about the son of the guy who said that you can’t have the inmates running the asylum. While a *horrible* choice of words given social issues, that old cliché still holds true. Bob McNair believed that the owners should be in full control, not the players. How far do we think Cal is from that belief?

Not far, I’d guess, from what we’re hearing about how dug in the Texans are.

Defining success as trading for a QB who isn’t being made available for trade by his team is only going to lead to disappointment.

Correction – Bob McNair’s quote was “We can’t have inmates running the prison,” not “…asylum,” but that actually makes it an even worse sound bite than asylum would have been. I’d bet that some of that rubbed off on Cal, and it’s going to be a long staring contest between him and DDW.

My boys!!! Great pod, as with the going rate for pass rushers, the reduced cap and all the complexities of this year makes this a tough call. I’m sorry Zac, but if I’m Von’s camp, your offers were too low, but you seem willing to deal, so I’m sure we can make something work out.

Now the Broncos system is to have multiple capable edge rushers, as rep for Von, I point out his production has been double digit for so many years, only dropped down when Chubb and Von got hurt.

Now to find Von’s value, you have to look at the edge rushers salary.

1. Joey Bosa – 135M/5yr – avg 27m per year – 102M guaranteed – 78M fully guaranteed
2. Miles Garrett – 125M/5 yr – avg 25M – 100M guaranteed – 50M fully guaranteed
3. Khalil Mack – 141M/6yr – avg 23.5M – 90M guaranteed – 60M fully guaranteed
4. Demarcus Lawrence – 105M/5yr – avg 21M – 65M guaranteed – 48M fully guaranteed
5. Frank Clark – 104M/5yr – avg 20.8M – 62M guaranteed – 43 fully guaranteed
6. Von Miller………

I’d work on a deal, but looking at those numbers, the club option is a better deal. Not taking up the option is only going to save the Broncos the 18M, as the 4M dead money will hit either way. He previous contract was 19M per year, and he’s top 4 on this list hands down, maybe a discount for age, coming off injury and for love of Broncos.

Here is what I would propose looking at both sides of the picture. Feel free to rip me to shreds. 3 years, 75M, avg 25M, 50M guaranteed, 36 fully guaranteed. Salary a bit lower in 2021 and more in 2022 and 2023.

Morning boys,

Just my two cents… please no Justin Fields. I don’t mean to generalize but the sample size is significant. OSU QBs don’t ever seem to pan out. Hard pass on Fields. Please no lol.

Sorry in advance for the long one,
Guys the QB debates this week are killing it, keep it up! I’d like to weigh in the on the Alex Smith topic, I think if we bring in Smith he is the unquestioned starter for 2021 at a minimum. He would be a 9-10 win QB and get us in the post season by minimizing turnovers and letting Fangio run his gameplan. If we do this though we are done with Lock. Signing Smith our plan should be to trade Lock and go all in on a round one QB and tell them they are sitting the next 1-2 years. I’d look at trading back a few spots to acquire capital and letting Zac’s boy Mac fall to us, he seems like an Alex Smith type and would lead to a smooth transition when its time. Or possibly a developmental QB in Lance towards the end of the first. In that scenario you assure Smith he’s the 2021 starter and will stay as such going forward as long as he takes us to the post-season and gives us a respectable showing. I’m not saying Smith would agree to this deal, but it would be my approach if I were Paton. Maybe a two year guaranteed contract with third and fourth year team options. Either way our years of thinking day two picks will be the future after need to end… BRENT….Brenda? Brock?? Whatever his name was.

If we intend to keep Lock I’d look at the Tyrod/Fitz type to mentor him, and help us keep the wheels from falling off if things with Lock don’t work out. I might even tell Drew that the vet is starting the first couple games to get the offense firing on all cylinders before Lock gets the reigns back. This plan gives us the flexibility to get a much needed Corner in the first round and gives Fangio peace of mind that he can get off to a fast start and be given some breathing room with regards to job security before he’s forced to put it on the line with Lock.

That’s just my two cents, I’d love to hear your thoughts, have a great one,

Greetings, good sirs!

I tried to squeeze this in before the buzzer yesterday, but missed the cutoff and the comment was really a draft. I had to hit submit before I really finished it when my downstairs bathroom started to flood. Now that that’s taken care of, here we go again (and I definitely heard that in David Coverdale’s voice when I typed it. Kids, ask Mase, he probably knows. 😉 )

Clearly, I’m about to come off as a huge Drew Lock apologist, and for that I… well, I guess I aplolgize for that. I’ve also surely missed a few pods here and there, so if I’ve missed this conversation, let me know and I’ll go back and listen.

Now for my point(s), which after listening to yesterday’s comments feel like much less of an unpopular opinion.

1. We seem to spend a lot of time with “How much better QB X would be than Drew,” with the caveat of “obviously the best thing for the Broncos is for Drew to ball out” thrown in.
How? Without just talking numbers, what does Drew need to work on specifically?

2. Context is important to any discussion, and football is a team sport.
2. Drew’s not the only person who struggled with the offense. Vic said so himself.
3. This one’s for Pat!
4. As PFM said, every interception has a story. We really don’t know everything involved in each play. If the QB throws a pick because a receiver ran the wrong route on a timing pattern, we put that on the QB because, stats. In that case the pick’s not really on him, though, is it? The stats tell us yes, but they don’t tell the whole story.
5. When that happens, we’re not going to hear Drew throw the receiver under the bus – he’s the QB, and he knows the buck stops with him. He’s going to suck it up and take the hit.
6. There is no #6
7. This one’s for John!
8. Yes, I added a few list items to squeeze in the Monty Python reference in #6. It’s the offseason.

I know we’re all hungry – nay, starving – for good QB play. The pangs of that hunger are nearly excruciating. Some of us who’ve watched this team since long before Rich Goins ever thought about climbing up a billboard have seen a *lot* of ups and downs, even with #7 behind center.

Ultimately, I just worry that we’re trying to get a 3-year loan from a loan shark (i.e. picks) and selling our favorite things at a garage sale (players) in order to go buy somebody else’s (admittedly elite) microwave before checking if the meal in the slow-cooker is done.

Thoughts?

Thanks, always for the great you and all the rest of the DNVR staff do.

What’s up boys

I got a question

So yesterday I was thinking it would be absolutely stupid to trade for Deshaun but then I got to thinking…

If you could argue that Jamal Adams was worth 2 first round draft picks, could you also argue that Justin Simmons is worth 2 first round draft picks? What about Garrett Bolles then he was an All Pro lineman? Maybe we could sign and trade Justin that would be worth 2 of the first rounders that Houston is asking for Give them the first this year which would be probably the best pick they can get and one more person?

My thing is I don’t wanna break the bank on losing draft picks and if I can get significant value for my players I’m trading I wanna do it. I don’t wanna sell out and create the exact same situation that Deshaun has been in the last couple of years.

Thanks guys!

The Quarterback talk yesterday about sitting a QB for the 1st on a 5yr plan or starting him made mev wonder??

Are there any modern QB’s who would survive in 1988 without a speaking in their helmets spoon feeding them plays? Brady, Brees an Rodgers?

There’s a big difference in having your offensive coordinator under center or in your ear isn’t there?
