Happy DREW-FREAKING-CEMBER

Zac, quick shout out to you! Tyler and i really appreciate the support!

What a game…. After the 1st quarter i was certain we were about to drop 35 on the bolts, but then our OC started playing “prevent win” and i lost my mind, only to be made worse when i flipped the channel in the 3rd to see how my Utah Jazz were doing against the reigning champs.. (down 76-40 at half..)

Atleast we got that DUB!

Holy crap what a fun game to watch!

Outside of the conservative play calling that held back Drew, it’s been a while since I’ve been this excited about the QB position for the Broncos. I can’t tell y’all how excited I now am to see my first ever Bronco game next week in Houston. What a change from a few weeks ago when I was worried I’d have to watch Flacco or Allen. I will now start my pounding of the table for the Broncos to draft Ceedee lamb in the first round next year. Let’s make this offense super dynamic with young cheap playmakers on offense and then have Vets on defense. Once the contracts are up on defense we’ll get to pay the offense and flip flop back and forth between the two. Not only do I think Ceedee is baby deandre Hopkins, he also would be a perfect compliment to Courtland, Fant, and Phil. Now the big caveat to this is that we need a different offense to play to the strengths of these players, not hold them back like this current one. What’re y’all’s thoughts on this and also do you think Scang is capable of tailoring the offense or should Den look elsewhere?

If we keep winning then I agree that Lamb, Jeudy or even Ruggs could be our first pick. Only if Wirfs or Thomas are out of our reach though.

High praise. I see potential to be those, but he’s got a long way to go. Loved what I saw yesterday though. He also seems like a nice kid, which is important too (to me anyhow). Finally there appears to be light at the end of that tunnel folks.

I know Kroenke owns the Rams, but he also owns half of Denver with the Nugs, Avs, and Rapids. Do you think he is seeing an opening with our situation, or will he be content with the Rams? Do you think we will be bought by someone already associated with the league or an outsider? (This assuming the trust falls through)

I think what we mean by building on Lock’s performance on Sunday is we want to see him play consistently at this level. Look like he did against the Chargers. I don’t need to see him play better, but if he goes out there and stays consistent and wins a couple more games and flashes his potential more i will be willing to hand him the franchise. That’s just me, but hey.
Love you guys and this community! Go DNVR

Hey Guys,

Im going to state the obvious… Scangarello needs to go!! Lock could’ve easily thrown 3 touchdowns last Sunday or maybe even more, and what does Scangarello do…the morons designs screen passes and run plays for the rest of the game!! This absolutely drove me insane to see this play it safe BS play calling by Scangarello. Lock showed in his very first start, against a division rival facing Joey Fricken Bosa, Melvin Ingram and Derwin James that he is the guy, that he is the real deal!! Like Mark Wahlberg said in the movie, The Other Guys “I’m like a peacock, you gotta let me fly!”. Scangarello needs to let Drew Lock fly!!
By the way Patrick Mahomes first game stats: 22/35 for 284yds 0TDS 1INT against the 2017 bad Denver Broncos defense . Lamar Jackson first game stats: 13/19 for 150 yards 0TDS 1INT against the crappy Bengals defense, Baker Mayfield 17/23 for 201 yds 0TDS and 0INT against the crappy Jets defense. Drew Lock’s performance of 18/28 134yds 2 TDS and 1INT is far better than any of these 1st performances especially considering Drew really only played 1 quarter where he was actually allowed to play, and the Chargers being a division rival who are also according to next gen stats the 4th overall best defense and 4th overall best passing defense. Guys as you can see I am 100% on the Drew Lock hype train, along with many others in Broncos country. This guy is the future!!

Thanks guys

Guys I feel like we need to give Drew and Scangerello Some time to work together and see what works. This is the first year for both guys and the first game for both. It’s like the defense it took Vic a few games to figure out what works and what doesn’t. Am I wrong? If so please tell me where he’s making mistakes that look long term.

We’ve seen what Scangs can do in the Minnesota game, how can he scheme so good (albeit for only 2 quarters) then scheme like he has done so.

Yiadom is trash. Hamo needs to sit down so DownTown Fred Brown can stand up. We need jano. Lock is exciting.

Everyone is excited about Drew Lock right now, bit can we talk about kickers for a second? Brandon McManus was amped to try a 65 yard field goal attempt at the end of the first, and he was pretty upset he didn’t get to try. McManus has done a lot of good for the Broncos over the years, and the man deserved the shot at a 65 yarder. I think his career long is 55 so it’s hard to say if he makes it from 65, but it’s got to be more entertaining to see McManus go for a new record than watching a play that has no chance to put points on the board. I like Fangio as a coach overall, but I think he did a disservice to McManus here. Give the guy a shot!

We continue to say this game does not fit Drew locks abilities, my question is… What scheme best utilizes Drew’s attributes, and who is the OC needed to attain this?

December 3, 2019

Guys,

I’m going to go against the grain a bit here and say we need to slow our roll on the Scangarello hate-train a bit.

Don’t get me wrong, I was as frustrated as anybody watching the Broncos nearly snatch defeat from the jaws of victory yet again by trying to ride a lead for three quarters, but I am not 100% convinced we are being fair to Rich here. After all, play calling is the OC’s purview (and yes, there have certainly been some head-scratching calls), but the overall strategy/management of the game is squarely on the head coach. When I see an offense completely change gears like the Broncos have tended to do if they get up by a couple touchdowns, my assumption is that the head coach has given the order to chew clock.

Is it possible that what we saw in the first half of the Vikings game and the first quarter on Sunday was actually Scangarello unchained? Fangio has shown he has the guts to go for the kill at the end of games, but I have to wonder if he is not the architect of the old-school, boring, grind the clock approach to playing with even a moderate lead. Thoughts?

I think Hayduke is on to something here. Coming out fast and tearing it up means that through your prep you were ready for the other team. The scary thing for us is the NFL is about adjustments, the other teams seem too and then we don’t, combined with the punt is not a bad play mentality. I wonder who does put the shackles on the O?

Hey guys!

It’s been awhile since I commented. You guys are great! I’m so glad Drew is playing and I’m pumped about what I saw from him!
I’m just sitting here watching the Monday night football game and I like how Seattle has there green on top and blue on the bottom. Any chance the Broncos could ever do Orange tops and blue bottoms?? I personally do it on Madden all the time and I love it haha. What do you guys think!? Mase, I know your the expert on the uniforms haha. But also just wanted to say thanks for the articles in audio! Hey guys,
Hello from the frozen tundra of Fargo, North Dakota! First ever comment here, I felt it was a good time with Mase shouting out my city last week. I have been listening since the off-season and recently became a subscriber. I have been a die-hard broncos and nuggets fan, ever since I was a kid growing up in Colorado. It may be Vikings land up here, but there are a LOT of broncos supporters around here too.
No question for you guys, just wanted to say hello, and thanks for all the great Broncos (and nuggets) coverage!

December 3, 2019

I get the frustration with Scangerello, but you can’t call for the mans job yet, right? He’s growing in the position as well. Hopefully he adjusts his play calling to Lock, and Lock gives him some feedback on a few of the plays and situations that HE saw on the field.
I’d be concerned about changing the offense yet again with a new guy. Really hope Scangerello opens it up a little more in the final part of this season. I’d really like to see he and Lock develop chemistry. I think there’s hope for Scangerello, the next few games will tell us a lot.
For the first time in a while, I felt hope for the QB position. It’s a good feeling to have again. Do you think Scangerello was frustrated with Lock changing the play on the Sutton TD?
How would that play out in the quarterback room after the game?

Hey gents,

Been awhile since I commented but I thought I would let you know that with Drew’s first win, there is not only a buzz in the air surrounding Broncos Country, but there is also a buzz here in KcMo. My friends (who are Chiefs fans) genuinely want to see Lock succeed. He is from Lee’s Summit around here and there is a slight pride from the natives to see their hometown son get a dub in the NFL. I can only hope the hometown son can get a dub on his hometown team a couple weeks from now, which I might attend (ticket prices pending).

Love the pod!

Hey just wanted to let you know that I unplugged my microwave since I won’t need it to microwave my head. I haven’t been this excited for a new QB since Jake Plummer in 2003. I know it should of been Peyton Manning for my last excitement but to be honest I grew up hating him (respect hate) when he was a colt. So from 2012-2015 I felt we were renting him and it he never felt like our guy(to me). I was always a fan of Plummer and as a 9th grader I Thought that Denver would turn his career around. I was never a Cutler guy u til he was in Chicago. That was probably because what happened in 2006 when Plummer was Stupidly benched for him. I know Plummer was struggling. I just thought the Leash should of been much longer before you go to the rookie. The Broncos were 7-4 at the benching. DUMB! Any ways I’m looking forward to future games when All of Sutton we UnLOCK The Future.

This was the first game in the last two years that has actually given me hope for the future. Drew Lock brought the fire that I believe had been missing for some time. Just a couple of questions:

1. What is going on with this defense? During the 4th quarter, Charger wide receivers were getting wide open, it got me a little frustrated at times. Also, the defense has now given up a 4 &19 during the Bears game, and now a 4 & 11 during this game. What is going on?

2. I know you guys mentioned that the coaching staff “locked” Drew up during the last 3 quarters. But why on earth can’t this team play a complete game!!! It seems like the team will get into a rhythm during the first quarter, but then completely sputters out. What are your opinions on why this is?

Hey fellas!

After basking in the hope that Lock is the guy, I saw a video pop up of his parents after the game talking about their excitement and how Drew did. His dad mentioned that he was extremely thankful for the “awesome” plan the Broncos have had with Drew and sticking to it all along.

Is there something that I am missing? Wouldn’t the better plan be to play Drew as soon as he was healthy or at least let him practice? Didn’t know if you guys knew anything more about it now.

Thanks for all the content!

Hey guys,
I know we have a lot of talk of getting rid of Scangarello/changing the offense (which I can understand and mostly agree with). However I ask what can the Broncos do to make this offense work if the Broncos don’t change the offense. I’m going with the obvious one and continue to work the the o-line. What else could be changed to make this offense work?

I was sitting at home waiting for the game to come on, and CBS says we will either be able to watch the Chief or Broncos game…. well they turned on the Chiefs game so I was getting all the updates off of twitter and it was the worst. I was so stoked to see Lock start and play, and of course it was the one week it didn’t show the broncos. Then in the 3rd quarter I left my house to go to Dinner early since I couldn’t watch the game, and they switched it to the Broncos game 10 minutes after I had left since the Chiefs were blowing out the Raiders. I guess it wasn’t meant to be for me to watch Lock in his first game. So I want to thank you guys for doing a live after game recap and your awesome articles!

Also Mase, if you putting your foot on the brake is like when when you are about to start a drag race and are inching forward with your other foot on the gas and just waiting for that flag to drop then it’s ok to have your foot on the brake! But you better take it off when Lock drops that flag (which I believe he’ll do sooner than later) and smoke those tires off the start line. And Zac, don’t have your foot so much on the gas that your tires spin out and cant get off the start line.

Quick takes:
1. I did love that after his interception he responded very well. Mase, this is something you refer to when evaluating a new quarterback.
2. The other players respect Drew and what he is trying to do. They have his back.
3. THIS ONES FOR PAT!
4. Scangarello needs to trust Drew and not let other mistakes in the past made by others affect his play calling. Let Drew make his own mistakes. They aren’t mistakes if he learns from them.
5. Hamilton needs to be replaced by Winfree. I don’t think it will happen but it needs to happen.
6. Fant is fine. He is learning and trying to get comfortable. I believe he’ll be a good TE for the following years
7. THIS ONES FOR JOHN!
8.CFS (Courtland f…ing Sutton) dude is making plays when it matters most. All I see him do is convert big downs and make big plays! He is going to be great
8. DNVR hands down provides the absolute best coverage of this team than ANY ONE ELSE! Get off the fence about subscribing and support these beautiful people and the work they are doing!

You guys just absolutely kill it! I am so glad 2 years ago, when I was searching for a Broncos podcast that I came across Zac and Ryan! DNVR has some of the most important qualities as a company for it to succeed long term. You guys have created an amazing community ( or cult) for us to come together and go through the ups and downs of this Broncos team the last few years! I think I can speak for most for saying thank you for being real with us and going through it all and we hope Drew is able to change this team and start winning some freaking games and get us back to the super bowl!

Short and sweet today

I’m now thinking that the Jason La Canfora was at least 75% accurate. Fangio’s comments about the “offensive coaches” to me confirms it. He tells it like it is. I really am getting the feeling that Scangarello is gonna be gone at seasons end.

And if Lock can win one of the next two road games then that is all I need to see. These are two playoff teams coming up. He would be THE GUY! Start making plans for building 2020 around him if we can snag a dub.

I still believe Rich deserves another year.

Sure, the offensive line played well last game, but Rich is still being hamstrung by some of the worst tackle play in the league.

Not to mention he has 1 legitimate receiving option on the offense, and the team doesn’t have an effective speed option at receiver- something this system has needed in the past to be successful- Taylor Gabriel in Atlanta and Cleveland, Santana Moss when Mike Shanahan was running the show in Washington, and Marquise Goodwin in San Fransisco. The team tried to acquire John Brown and John Ross but neither plan materialized.

Maybe the offense doesn’t look as anemic with one of those guys on the team. Reason why I’m 100% on board with them drafting Ruggs in the 1st or Jalen reagor in the 2nd!

That being said, if/when Pat Shurmur gets canned from New York, I’d absolutely be interested in him as an OC. Anyone who can make Keenum look good is worth taking a look at!

December 3, 2019

From what I saw Sunday I’m 1000% confident Drew is the guy. Unlike a lot of Allen’s success in his first game, Drew’s success came from his skills and fearlessness not just good game planning. This is what we’ve been missing since manning, a QB with the kahones to let it rip and call his shot when he sees something from the D or wants something different. What drew showed is everything you can teach and improve and everything that you can’t you’re just born with it or you aren’t. Talib once said we lost all the dogs on the team, well now we have one at the most important position in football. As long as Elway and Scangs doesn’t fudge it up we got our guy.

Joe Flacco ran by Drew like I run by a sink full of dishes. That guy is saltier than the Bolivian Salt Flats. If Joe was salt, he’d be that big chunky Himalayan salt you have to grind, not the fine grain salt. As a matter of fact, Joe is saltier than salt.

Hello DNVR family. Pardon the very long comment but I won’t be commenting often. I explain why in the following.
I’ve been listening since week 17 of the final Siemian season but I just subscribed with the black Friday promo. Firstly I wanted to clear the air on the quote “Freeloader listeners” if they are at all like me. Besides being just a Broncos fan and not the other Denver teams, the reason I never subscribed before was I just don’t have the time for all your amazing content. Up until recently, when I gave up on my trash fantasy team that will certainly lose in the first round of playoffs, I was listening to the pod a few days late. So I would never be able to make relevant comments on time. But now that we are heading into an offseason with Drew the future I thought I would invest. I don’t have the kind of job you can listen to at work and I have about 10 pods I listen to regularly. Among writing and other things there just isn’t time! So freeloaders DON”T FEEL BAD! (but you should subscribe. The audio articles are fantastic)
Also in the past the incentive of a free shirt wasn’t helpful because I already have every DNVR Bronco shirt (plus the Phil hoodie for me and my girl) except for the Vic shirt. I needed him to earn my trust which now I hope he has. I will use my 2 free items code for a future shirt for me and my girlfriend.
Now that I’ve explained myself… a few thoughts building for the last 2 years.
1. Team 2 holes. Has Mase given his input on that debate? I recently started this debate between my girlfriend and her daughter. We are all differing in opinion.
2. My very first 2 jerseys I bought at the same time in an offseason sale before Tebow was drafted were none other than an Orange CHAMP BAILEY and a Blue KYLE ORTON! I loved Orton in his two season I just think the madness of Mcdaniels tainted him. My most recent is an Orange Phil Lindsay and bought my GF a blue Phil jersey as well. I also have orange Peyton and Elway Jerseys. Next up would be an orange TD and hopefully a Blue Lock.
3. 3 is for Mr B. I will never forget the morning Mr B passed. I was doing a 5 am workout and my phone lit up half way through. I was devastated and almost ended my workout. But then I thought about Mr B and his determination to never give up and I had a great workout after. The following day I was working out again when RK described the sunrise or sunset as Orange and Blue for Pat. I had to take another misty eyed reprieve but returned to exercise in the memory of why I love the Broncos and Mr B.
4. Thank you thank you thank you for BRECK BREWS! I am not much of a Beer guy (prefer the hard stuff and the green stuff) but I recently found a liquor store by me that carries Strawberry Sky, Vanilla Porter and now recently the Christmas ALE! All at a great price! I love them all for different purposes and bought out their last (or what I thought would be their last of the season) 8 cans of Strwaberry sky. A 6 pack and they sell them individually. I got these the week after the browns game and reserve one can to drink after a win. Needless to say I have 7 cans left. Also RK really got me on the White Claw train and another I would recommend is TRULY hard seltzers. More flavors, same low sugar/carb and sometimes cheaper. Damn you RK and your great recommendations.
5. Living in LA I have watched the Broncos play here the last two seasons against the chargers and they won each time! Also I’ve been to Denver for 2 preseason games (My mom is a teacher and wanted to take me and my dad for my birthday so we can’t go regular season.) but they won each time! I wore my Peyton jersey for each game which I think is good luck. Each of those preseason games was the season of their Superbowl appearances with Peyton. I have always blamed the Seattle loss on me because I was watching with some friends who one got sick so we put it on pause. The friend whose house it was did not think to record the game. So we came back like 45 minutes later, the remote fell and changed the channel. When we got back to the channel it was late 3rd quarter and it was all over by then. My point is that my Peyton jersey has magic and it’s my fault we lost Super bowl 48. But for Super Bowl 50 I only missed 1 play and it was the blocked punt/FG if I remember correctly so that one worked out.
6. Get Scangs outta here. It doesn’t fit the philosophy of the team. We go with the one of the oldest most experienced defensive minds in the game and an OC that has amounted to nothing just because he’s part of the coaching tree we want to be in. I hate it. He can’t figure out how to use Phil and Royce right. He is too afraid to be called out for big plays so he tries the smallest most disappointing plays possible. Get me someone else.
7. Despite the strife. 7 is still for Elway. Everyone looks at their own team critically at times and other times no criticism whatsoever. I have two “friends” who are Steelers fans. They never admit there is a culture problem in Piitsburgh. They always back Big Ben despite being an overrated QB and a trash human being. They defend him going on the radio and calling out his guys who fail. They also blamed AB for Ben’s interception to Shelby Harris last year. How ridiculous is that? They would spit on the jerseys of AB and Leveon Bell because they didn’t want to be in a trash organization anymore. I still defend those two diva or not. Pittsburgh is clearly a toxic place to play with their GM calling everyone boys under Ben. I won’t even start on Tomlin. My point is this would never happen under Elway. Just because he isn’t the best at drafting QBs and other pieces he is still better than most and has kept a team from utter turmoil. Wins, losses, yards and points aren’t everything. I would still stand behind this team after back to back winless seasons as long as the integrity of the players and the organization is intact. Give me a Bengals season with good guys and coaches rather than a 2018 Chiefs season with the likes of Tyreek Hill, Kareem Hunt, Frank Clark or Andy Reid. Also I think the tomahawk chop is racist along the same lines as the Redskins team name.
8. I may be the only one who thinks Mahommes is overrated. I have a top 5 list of QBs who if they were in the perfect offensive situation as the chiefs with Andy Reid would be WAY better than Mahommes. In no order that list is Lamar Jackson, Deshaun Watson, Kyler Murray, Russell Wilson and Dak Prescott. Lamar is the only one with a good coach. The others are in weak situations and they are excelling. If they had the same weapons and coach as mahommes they would blow him out of the water. Not to mention their defense is so bad they are always in situation they have to throw and throw. Look at Lamar. Not only is he lighting it up. He elevates every part of the team. Ravens D was okay at the start but they are playing killer right now! Lamar doesn’t have to lean on them and they don’t have to lean on him. We should all be grateful Lamar is not and will never be a Chief (knock on wood!).
9. For how I became a fan not from Denver it goes like this. I lived in CA as a child and liked the 49ers but not a fan they were just close to me. We almost moved to WISCONSIN so I thought hey, maybe I can be a Packers fan. My mom even got me a Packers plush blanket that I still have. BUT we ended up moving to OREGON instead! As you know they don’t have a pro team and I wasn’t about to be a Seahawks fan. I had a lot of opinions despite never really watching football. My first Superbowl I ever watched was my first few months living in Oregon. I thought I still wanted to be a Packers fan and my dad said he liked the Broncos to win because he likes Underdogs. Whether they were or not this one statement from my Dad changed my mind as I watched Elway put it all out on the field. From that day on I was a fan of the orange and blue (colors that were already my favorite – green and yellow suck! I didn’t like the Oregon Ducks either despite living 10 minutes from Autzen stadium).
10. Lastly, I messed up when I subscribed and did not put the code for the pod host I would vote for. If it still counts, for the record I would have put….. (wait for it) RK! I love all 3 of you equally but I credit RK for my new love of White Claw/Truly and the Breck Brews. We were also being Keto Kids at the same time. But what really made me decide on RK was either this offseason or last, RK became the only person I have ever heard mention one of my favorite desserts ever! Strawberry Rhubarb pie/cobbler! By that I mean friends, podcasts, cooking shows… none of them ever mention Strawberry Rhubarb desserts! In Los Angeles I wouldn’t even know where to find Rhubarb. It is an amazing combination and everyone should try! I could eat it every day. When I was a kid living with my parents in Oregon they grew rhubarb and strawberries in the garden and made fresh cobbler from that! DELICIOUS! I remember sneaking bites of it cold right out of the pan in the fridge. It’s great cool or warm! With ice cream it’s even better (for you Zac)! Mase let us know if you have ever had the pleasure! If I ever own a restaurant it would be my featured dessert!
Keep up the great work guys! Again sorry for the very long comment but I am not the type to comment every episode or even every week. Happy Holidays to the best pod community out there!

I have a hint that may be able to help people out. If you don’t have DirectTV (or just don’t want to pay for the Sunday ticket in full), find someone you know that has a college e-mail account. They have a student subscription that lets you get the Sunday ticket for just $100. All you have to do is sign up with that college email and say that you don’t have access to DirectTV at college and BOOM, you’re in! I’ve been doing it for three years now!

Hey guys, just a question concerning the secondary. I’m a huge fan of Jackson, Simmons, and Parks. With the latter two in a contract year, is there any chance both are retained? Could either of them make a transition to corner in the case CHJ leaves in FA? I know it’s common for old corners to switch to safety, is there any precedence for that occurring in reverse?
Thanks for your time!

Hey guys! Hopefully some experts can help me out here. The call to pass on the field goal before halftime and to potentially kneel it to close at the 4th seem like obvious bad calls, but what’s with the last two minutes before half time.

In a pointless game, where a loss isn’t the worst thing, Lock and the offense got the ball with a little above 2 minutes. Denver basically sat on the ball in what seemed like a perfect situation to present itself to your rookie QB. Luckily….we stalled, AND the Chargers still scored before half. Denver’s offensive coordinator then doubled down on his stupidity by going to a hurry up offense with 25 seconds left only to then give up at the slight chance of 3 points.

Is there any reasoning to this? Or did Scangarello continue to double down on his stupidity before the half?
