I umderstand that practices are limited but can Shurmur work with Lock to better understand the scheme he will be implementing? And how do you believe this move effects any offseason workouts Lock may organize with WRs?

Hey fellas! The OC move was a shock to me, as I’m sure it was to many. I’ll keep it short. I hope Fant continues to get heavy usage in the new system. I’ve become a big fan of his!

Also, you mentioned Shurmur runs a lot more shotgun and 3-WR sets. Does this change our off-season priorities? Does that WR2 become the absolute, uncontested, number 1 need this off-season? Thanks for your takes!

Here is a thought.

Maybe scangarello, despite getting along with lock, isn’t sold on him. Maybe fangio and Elway are. Maybe scangs wanted a free agent qb brought in and fangio doesn’t. Maybe they moved on from scangs because they want a guy like shurmur who loved Drew lock as a prospect and can maximize his potential.

Kudos to Elway for hiring a guy that is somewhat outside of the offensive scheme he generally likes to run. This screams to me of hiring a guy fangio wanted.

Excited about the possibilities here

Looking into some Shurmur offenses. It seems like he doesn’t require a pure burner in the same way that Shanahan does, but he tends to like guys who can create yards by themselves and pick up significant yards after the catch. Now Ruggs is a capable YAC threat….but in my mind this means that Laviska and CeeDee Lamb’s stock is skyrocketing, for the Broncos, and someone like Brandon Aiyuk could be someone that appears on their radar now.

On the subject of wide receivers. Given his familiarity with Shurmur- if Stefon Diggs became available via trade, and it definitely seems like that may be the case, would y’all trade for him and what what y’all give up for him if yes.

Just dropped by to say that I’m stoked about the OC change. It got really tired this season seeing them try tricky plays without setting them up first.
P.S. I hope we’ve seen the last of the tight end sweep plays.
P.P.S. My Lock jersey supposedly gets delivered tomorrow after visiting more states than I have been to, thanks FedEx.

I need some explanation on the relevance of the Senior bowl. Why would what you see in one game dramatically change what you think of a guy in opposition to having watched a whole college career? Seems a bit like it would either conform or disprove what you already know.

I love the decision to move away from Scangs. Most of us have been saying the same thing all year, this offense was tough and unnecessarily complex. We paired that with a first time OC and the results were terrible. Even if you look at just the Lock games, Denver still struggled on offense despite the wins. Take away the Texans game and Lock threw for over 200 yards just once…the KC game and we all know how that game turned out. Scangs’ offense was good enough to grab you an early lead but his inability to make adjustments was a huge reason why we lost more then a few games.

I’m excited to bring in a new OC who has a history of getting great results from QBs. His work with Bradford, Foles and Keenum is very promising. I understand the hesitancy about changing systems but this is about the future. Sutton, Lindsay, Fant, Risner and Lock will be able to fit this offense just fine and those are our core players. There was no chance that we could beat KC with Scang’s offense or with Scang calling the plays. We are more likely to be closer to league average or better in points per game under Shurmur and that will make us a team to watch out for in 2020.

Thanks for all your guys’ hard work. Go Broncos.

People love Mike Hawk! You know why?? Because that’s Tony Hawks brother and Tony is a skate boarding champ and man of the people!
The Broncos recent moves at OC can be compared to the following situation…
You’re in high school and you settle for a girl you like less than another, because the other still has a boyfriend. But in a dramatic turn of events, that other girl and her boyfriend break up. So then you break up with your current girlfriend and swoop the other girl you liked more all along!

You guys had me so stressed for a second there. ‘The big news is the Broncos moving forward without Brandon Staley.’ Then RK starts to cosign for a bit and in my head I’m like “what do you mean? How have you not heard about Scangs and Shurmer? I need yall to talk about this so I know how to feel about it!” ? well done gentlemen, ya got me.

So me and my friends were talking yesterday about movies that have made us cry (as men often do) and so I was wondering if it’s pretty easy or difficult for movies to make yall cry and what are some movies that have made you cry? For me, I can count them on 1 hand: Radio, Interstellar, Out Of The Furnace, and of course, I Am Sam because you don’t have a soul if that movie didn’t make you cry. But some of my friends had hilarious answers like 13 Going On 30 that made me go “…at which part?”

I am so bummed I didn’t get in on the comments before you guys recorded this after the news came out, but like RK in this pod after doing a bit of research I’m cautiously optimistic and excited about this change. First off thanks to Scangs for his work with drew this year I hope he’s successful in his next stop…now time to for awesome!

Shurmur’s offense runs a mix of WCO and spread concepts that include RPOs and high percentage throws that make young QBs wildly efficient. This is the perfect pairing for Lock. Shurmur made Bradford have a %71.6 completion percentage, Foles have a 27:2 TD/INT season, took That Case “Keesum” guy to the NFC championships, and made McNabb the first NFL QB with 30 TDs and less than 10 interceptions. All NFL records at the time. This is Drew Lock gold. He’s also prone to inside zone running schemes so it may not be as painful as we think on the O line. I’m excited.

My only concern is he grossly underutilizes the FB and I don’t want to see us lose Jano, just as much as I don’t ever want to eat a store brand pop tart!

What’s your guys take on the future of Janovich?

Sorry for the long comment, stay awesome

Also of note. The Broncos can get out of Jano’s contract after the 2020 season with a $675k dead cap hit. Doesn’t seem like they’re tied down to him for the long term. Shoutout Mike Sullivan for these well-structured contracts!

Hello Broncos land,

Shout out to Mike Hawk as I could not come up with a username to save my life. So from Yorkhawk to Mike Hawk thanks 😉

With the change to Pat are we still employing the zone scheme or will this change the prospects that we look at with the line? I know with zone you want more athletic fits but with this being a hybrid scheme are we looking somewhere other than Tyler B? Drink

The Broncos need to be very weary of not following down the same path in terms of career trajectory of Alex Smith. Alex Smith is another quarterback who went through several changes and instability in terms of coaching dating back from his college days into the pros. What’s things got stabilized for him with Jim Harbaugh coming in and tailoring an offense around his strengths I truly saw him succeed. The same thing goes for his move over to Kansas City.

This can absolutely be argued but I personally don’t consider Pat Shurmur a failed to time head coach in the NFL considering the instability of the organization’s he was at. The Browns and the Giants are spiraling downward from the top and have been for some time. From the outside looking in you can say the Broncos fall into this category with everything happening in the ownership lawsuit and the narrative that John Elway may be a coach killer. Hopefully Shurmur is around for a while but if their success I would not be surprised to see him get picked up by a team.

Also I need to know if I’m the only one that freezes their pop tarts and eats them that way? I only do this with the desert one and they are excellent so I highly recommend to anybody to try it!

Hot fudge sundae is by far the best flavor out there when it comes to Pop-Tarts. The best combo is to make some hot chocolate and dip the pop tarts in with it. Literally perfect for a snowy day. Now when it comes to football, I believe Shurmur was the QB coach for the Eagles with McNabb back in the days and if you asked me they put up some pretty good numbers so that’s certainly something we can hope for.

My guys,

I’m surprised by all of these “Shurmur Murmurs” I’m hearing from other places in the media world (mostly other less-good media members) calling this a terrible move. I think at the very worst the offense will be middle of the road and with Vic on the defensive side it sounds like a winning formula! All year long we said if the offense was average we will be a 10-6 to an 11-5 team ??‍♂️

On more important topics, s’mores, chocolate fudge and wild berry pop tarts are the best, but no pop tart is as good as strawberry cream cheese toaster strudels. Unreal deliciousness.

Can’t wait to dive into Dre’s film room to see what the deal with Shurmur is!

Take is easy, fellas!

January 13, 2020

I was definitely wanting some continuity on offense but I am not mad about this decision.
1. Shurmur is a good OC but has a terrible record as HC so may not get another shot. So could stay for a while even if the offense is playing well
2. More similarity than first glance. Shurmur adjust well to players skill set. I expect to see more zone than we saw in NY and Minnesota for example. As we don’t presently have a true 1 power back.
3. For Mr B
4. Good for Drew Lock should fit his skill set better. As long as he can continue to improve his footwork and accuracy. As he will likely be expected to complete alot of lower risk quick reads.
5. All this said I hope we can still find a way to utilize Jano and Fant.

I’m from Australia and I know better than that. God damnit Zac get your head in the fucking game.

Any hoot – you guys ever tried Vegemite? Or Tim Tams? What about Lamingtons? Sausage Rolls? If not, Australian food care package needs to be arranged.

This is my first off season with this crew (the drew crew?). Looking forward to exploring the culinary world of Colorado, which so far appears to be mostly available in two isles King Soopers.

On to football – given the age of our coaching staff is it appropriate to riff our excitement as;

“I’ve got a murmur for Shurmur”

Chronic cardiovascular issues aside, I feel like Fant may benefit a little bit more on this change than eluded to. Fant is not a blocker, and he wants the ball in space. Watching Celce be unstoppable spread out just makes me drool thinking about what might be possible with a speed threat added into our mix and Fant having space to work the middle of the field against LBs with safety’s needing to be backed up and else where. What am I missing here?

Sup fellas! After about a month of listening, I decided to finally pull the trigger and subscribe, bringing some additional Oklahoma flavor to the comment section! With the hiring of Shurmur, do you see it as a possible insurance policy from Elway if the team falters under Vic next season? I’m fully behind Vic, but with a new head coach there’s always the chance they don’t succeed and the team goes back to someone with experience. Love the pod, but brown sugar cinnamon pop tarts are severely underrated, as are cherry!

You mentioned it boys, but my only sadness with the OC change is the potential departure of TC Mccartney as QB coach. Everything I’ve read about his performance has been positive. Bias alert, I was a CU student when his dad was QB, and want nothing but the best for him. I’m hoping that the organization will see that he could provide a measure of consistency in the midst of this change.

If he ends up leaving, what do you think TC’s chances are of getting an opportunity elsewhere?

Interested if Mase is on the show to get his take on Shurmer as OC if he hasn’t already joined us! Wondering if he will bring me back to reality because I’m getting a little over zealous. Hey guys, how would you guys feel about bringing Keenum back? I’m not sure if he’d take a cheap deal, but if he would and accepted the back up mentor roll that would be the perfect scenario for me. He had his best year in this offense and if the unspeakable happens and he had to play, if the offense was rolling before he came in I think he could definitely come in and win some games. There might be bad blood with Elway but the whole coaching staff is new so there would be no hard feelings there. Curious what you guys think, thanks RK and Zac!

Just wanted to praise Andre’s article on Shurmur. If anyone listening hasn’t subscribed, you’re missing out on quality content. I have a much better understanding of what to expect from Shurmur after reading Andre’s breakdown.

Mase’s opinion on Pop Tarts is the right one. How has Zac made it this far in life without Hot Pockets and real Pop Tarts? I thought his family was big on organic food or something, then he talks about picking up guac for family dinners from Chipotle (pronunciation guide, “Chip-oat-lay”). Zac’s childhood foods make no sense to me.

I think this move was very surprising by the broncos, especially with everyone saying scangarello was coming back for sure in 2020. But I think this is exactly what the offense needed. BLUF: Andy Dalton is the s’mores pop tart of the 2020 backup QB market.

Andy Dalton for QB2 and here’s why:
Looks like Cincy can save $17million if they cut him and I don’t think any teams pick up that number. We might be able to bring him in for a lot less. He’d give us a backup who can keep us afloat if need be, has experience in this league and won’t be a threat to Lock.

Here’s a hot take for you:

Hotdogs aren’t sandwiches, they’re American sausage tacos. Think about it: from the ground up a taco is tortilla, ground meat, vegetables, sauce, and cheese. Replace the tortilla with a bun, take the meat and put it in a tube, replace the cumin and chili powder with unsavory animal parts and BOOM. You’ve got a hotdog.

Don’t @ me, I’m right.

Also, RK if you need a good keto pizza recipe let me know. Been going keto/low carb for the last six months and I’m loving it.

And now for a football question: which fan base is the worst? If you’ve the time, could you break down the worst division rival, NFL, and then just general sports fan bases?

Also, do you think Will Parks could be retained as a corner? I know this isn’t Madden, where you can just switch guys’ positions with no consequences, but I feel like he’s been fairly good in coverage. A D backfield of Callahan, Parks, Bausby, Simmons, and Jackson sounds dynamic AF to me.

In Elway we Rust changing his handle to In Elway we Trust is about one thing and one thing only. Everything has changed.

I have noticed a major change in the DNVR pod, Broncos tweets, listener comments and even the Broncos stories on most sites.

It’s Drew Lock. Having our QB changes everything. I don’t know how many times I’ve said “none of this crap matters till you have your QB1”. Well we Got eeem!!!

Imagine if Flacco was still our QB and we’d just switched to Shurmur. The whole offseason would be spent dissecting how Shurmur can get Flacco to…..you know what, I can’t even say it without throwing up in my mouth a little.

Here’s how I’d rank the ideal coaching situation:
#1: A great coach & staff that have been around for years
#2: Searching for the right coach & staff even if it means firing every year (min. 2-3 years for HC though)
#3: Keeping the same bad coaches

Keeping Scangz isn’t “stability”, it’s consistency. I and many others (including Vic) believe he is not the right guy so to me, there is no benefit to keeping him around. I’m 1000% in favor of this move. Drew Lock has an entire offseason as QB1. Their ceiling is higher. My optimism for this team next season has sky-rocketed! Go Broncos.

Hey boys hope all is well. Nothing to add other than a quick useless story. My wife and I have an old pug named Sherman and we have been calling him Pat Shurmer ever since Shurmur got the giants job and I had Saquon on a couple fantasy teams. Now with Shurmur headed to Denver we might have to think about a full on name change.

All in all I am very excited for the veteran hire. I think with a defensive minded head coach having a unproven OC like Scangarello adds some unnecessary stress. Now with Shurmer leading a hopefully competent offense Vic can focus fully on defense without having to second guess a rookie OC. Thanks for everything you do boys. Making the office job fly by.

Keenum is an unrealistic option, though he made a good pairing with Shurmur in 2017. It seems like the guy to keep an eye on is Nick Foles. He should become available this offseason and he succeeded under Shurmur as well, though I think Andy Reid might’ve been calling the plays at the time. What do you guys think it would cost to acquire Nick Foles from the Jags? I would imagine Jacksonville will be paying the vast majority of Foles’ remaining salary regardless of the jersey Foles winds up wearing going forward. With the Shurmur hiring, I think Foles might be the Broncos’ target to back up Lock!

Hey guys
Wish mase was around for this comment but I also wanna ask you guys. RK keeps talking about wanting to back the brinks truck up for a dominant DT in free agency and I dont disagree because they are super hard to find however corner is critical in this pass happy league especially going against mahomes twice a year and strap leaving. So the question comes down to DT or CB in free agency and how do you guys see solving both? We dont really have that kinda cash to do both and address the O Line or am I wrong? Also shout out to breck brews as I finally found some strawberry sky down here in happy valley Utah County #Damngoodbeer
