The heavy breathing at the beginning of the pod was unsettling…
Andrew Mason
Yes, sorry about that. I had to adjust the levels when I asked the question to make sure it could be heard, so it picked up the coach’s breathing. (The only mic there was the one in front of the coach.)

Hey guys!
Since it’s BBQ week on the pod, and Mase is a Carolinan, do you guys like Santa Maria style? Slow grilled tri-tip (which is the loin, tenderloin, and sirloin unseparated), beans, and chicharrones, and salad (if you’re frisky). It always seems lost in the conversation of barbeque. Next year, before the chargers game, if you’re able to drive an hour out to Ventura, you need to stop at Marshall’s Bodacious BBQ. You can’t miss the chicken on the roof, or the trailer grills parked out front. Marshall got into the business after years of experience as a butcher. He has the usual suspects in ribs, pulled pork, and brisket, but the trip tip is tender, juicy, and flavorful. His seasoning and sauces put him over the top. It’s one of the best in Southern California. PismoBeachBronco, where’s your go?
Anyway, did you guys see Von Miller’s Instagram post about the “offsides” penalty on his sack? Once again, a demonstration of how he’s too fast and timed too perfectly for all other 27 people on the field. Is there something that can be done about these brilliant plays called back, or is Von just destined to forever pay his taxes?
Andrew Mason
I’ve had Santa Maria tri-tip, but never in Santa Maria. I had some up at Gorilla BBQ in Pacifica, near San Francisco, a few years ago. Definitely need to give Marshall’s a try — thanks for the recommendation!

Mase’s story from 2011 about Kyle Orton yelling at Patrick Smyth reminded me of an entertaining story I hadn’t thought to share here.
My mom, brother and I went to a training camp practice that summer. It was QB day to sign autographs so we split up into different lines. My brother got the autograph of Adam “Sunshine” Weber. My mom got the autograph of Brady Quinn, who oddly enough, signed a Corinthians verse that doesn’t exist. We double and triple-checked a copy of the Bible to confirm. We still laugh about it to this day. For the record, my mom said Brady was a REALLY nice guy. I ended up in the absurdly long Tebow line, eventually got to the front and was almost face-to-face with him. I was starstruck by his strange aura and those radiant blue eyes…and just as I nervously lifted up my Broncos calendar and sharpie, he promptly turned around and went back to the locker room. While I would never be so arrogant as to say he didn’t last long term in the NFL because he snubbed me, I can’t say that’s NOT why either.
Where was Kyle Orton, you ask? Skipped his fan obligations and immediately headed into the locker room with the rest of the team.
Andrew Mason
Sorry Tebow didn’t sign … but if I were in your shoes, I would probably have the same sort of theory for his lack of NFL success! Does not surprise me about Orton. When Tebow came in, things got a bit askew. The team stores carried a ton of Tebow jerseys, and few Orton ones. What little love he had from the fan base vanished. He clearly didn’t want to be around. Orton did not ever appear comfortable or interested in the spotlight that comes with being an NFL quarterback.

Just subscribed today guys! Excited to join the family! I’m about 75% (cue Mase hand slap) confident that we will give the Chiefs a run for their money this Sunday! Thanks for keeping the fun alive through the season! Looking forward to being able to read the articles and listen to the podcast.
One last thing, where will the tailgate party be for the Detroit game? Would love to swing by and see you guys!
Andrew Mason
The tailgate will be in lot N, which is south of the stadium (and just a few steps south of the W light-rail line that goes out to Golden, near the Decatur/Federal station).

For anybody worried about Drew Lock wearing that wrist band well I’ve been a Broncos fan since the early 90’s and something looked familiar about that wrist band. For those of you who don’t remember or were too young to remember John Elway also wore a wrist band. I’m not sure how often he wore it but, seeing Drew Lock with a wrist band just brought back all of those fuzzy feelings of watching John Elway so many years ago lol. Great work on the podcast guys keep it up I still can’t believe Mase finally came over to the good side May the Force be with You Always.

Mase, yesterday you talked about the wacky 2001 schedule with 9/11. Could you please tell us about your experience and thoughts about the Broncos role? I was only 2 years old at the time, but I recently watched the NFL Films production about the Giants and 9/11.
Perhaps the most chilling story of all was a Giants fan who worked in the North Tower whose life was saved because he came out to Denver that Monday night to experience the brand-new Mile High Stadium. Also, in the video, the Giants players say that they probably passed people who were on the planes. Just crazy.
Thank you.
PismoBeachBroncos07
Hypothetical. Broncos go 7-9. Lock looks pretty good. They are drafting somewhere around 15 or 17 and Tua falls because of injury concern. Do you take him based on the value at that spot, because you virtually guarantee that QB spot is going to be settled between the 2 of them? They would still have enough firepower to move back into the first round to draft that Center from Wisconsin that’s the best thing since sliced bread according to mase. Thoughts?
Andrew Mason
I would, but I doubt they will.
The pod on 18 October after the TNF horror show vs the Chiefs was rightly entitled “What the hell was that?”. We are unrecognisable from that nadir. Flacco was being sacked for fun, the team had no energy, the offence was pathetic. Now we have an O line standing tall and playing clean, a buzz to the team in all three phases, and we are posting some points! Looking for a pod entitled “How awesome was that?” this time around! Go Broncos! Come on boys!!
Andrew Mason
I love how the vibe has completely changed. It’s fun covering this team right now, even though the season will almost certainly end on Dec. 29.
Comment on the Devin Duvernay talk last pod, a big reason he didn’t have as many receptions the past few years was due to being buried on the depth chart behind Colin Johnson and Lil Jordan Humphrey and some other good talent. He is a high character kid and I’ve never heard or seen of him getting in any trouble or knuckleheadery while he was at UT. Definitely don’t have to worry bout him being a Henderson. Also hope all y’all had an amazing week and I ask for thoughts and prayers as I got food poisoning and this is the worst I’ve felt since having pneumonia when I was 9 also the private school boys basketball team I coach for starts our games the first week of January and I’m very excited for that! Can’t wait to see Lock shock the Chefs and allow me to talk smack to my extended family as they are all from KC Missouri area and I’m the black sheep Broncos fan

So with Drew Lock looking like he will be the guy next year, this allows us to put an awesome team around him. How about keeping that defense together. Need to resign Justin Simmons and Chris Harris! Unfortunately let will parks, Shelby Harris, and Derek Wolfe go. But sign Chris Jones as your big free agent! You still have Jones, walker, and attacheiou for depth. For offense obviously cut Flacco. Maybe sign Fitzpatrick or josh mccown as back up. I would let go of Leary and sign Costonzo at LT and let bolles learn as swing and prepare as RT. I would draft with our 1st pick Laviska Shenault to make our offense explosive. Imagine our offense with Drew lock throwing to shenault , Sutton , Patrick , and faint. With win free the other Colorado kid learning. Have Lindsey as your dynamic back and over the summer have a qbs camp with all offensive weapons. That way Ryan can get his RRPPO offense and teach Scangs how to run it. Use the 2nd, 3rds, 4th rds to do some trades to get 2 more solid lineman , a cb , and either another wide receiver or a inside linebacker. Then we are right back to competing for a Super Bowl. Also in Elway we trust! A few “bad picks “ are starting to look better. Yiadom and walker being two “busts” who now look like potential players to help this team build!
Shaggymcloviniii
Also scary thought but what if because of injury Tua drops and some dumb team trades with NE and they get him because everyone was scared to pull the trigger. I’m touching wood praying this doesn’t happen!
Broncology
To clarify, I truly believe Lock is the guy moving forward. I believe he has the work ethic and teachability needed for a young QB with fabulous assets. I think this off-season will be huge for him working on some areas he is lacking
With that said, after watching the tape on him from the Houston game, it appears he is not looking off additional coverage and he had some risky throws that could have ended up bad. He makes up for these close calls with his rocket arm, but he won’t always be so lucky especially with DC’s getting more tape on him. I am hoping with more experience he will see the field a bit better and be safer with the ball.
Worst Qb in Denver history?
Kyle Orton, and it’s not even close.
Thanks guys, you have moved into my number one spot for broncos news. Maybe I signed up at the wrong time, but I don’t have a t-shirt
Thanks again.
Andrew Mason
Orton wasn’t inspirational, but he wasn’t the worst QB in Broncos history. Paxton Lynch, for example, was worse. And going back to some previous eras, just look at 1976, when the team went 9-5 despite utilizing a collection of flotsam and jetsam that started with Steve Ramsey. Orton had bursts of capability.
Nathaniel Thiccett?
I know this wont get read on the next pod but just wanted to put it in writing before the game to be able to reference after. I had a dream the Broncos beat KC 31-30 so let’s see if I have the gift of prophecy or just subconscious wishful thinking.
The Whiskey Cat
Hey guys, what’s good. I heard the interview with Fangio earlier, but didnt recognize Mase’s voice and I was like, “Who is styling on Fangio right now?” Funny stuff. The Broncos human encyclopedia strikes again.
Also, regarding the meetup, I commented too late yesterday. My vote is for Jack Stack. I love KC Joe’s, but depending on how busy it is and how many we have we may not all be able to sit together.
In any case, I’m still down to make a reservation if necessary to make things easier on Mase while travelling and prepping for the game.
If youd like me to do that, name the restaurant and the time and have everyone attending email me at jonceewagner@gmail.com so I can get a headcount and make a reservation. If you’d like to coordinate yourself and need me to do something else. Just let me know.
I’m so amped to meet the DNVR fam this weekend. We’ll be on honorary Broncos Country soil here in Chiefs Kingdom.
Andrew Mason
Too bad we can’t do a poll here — Jack Stack or Joe’s! I’m cool with either. If you want in, respond in this thread here so we can get a head count!
The Whiskey Cat
No responses yet? Maybe Joe’s will be fine if we don’t have many. Don’t worry Mase, I’ll at least show up and have a Z-Man with you ?.
dp3107
Orig Joe’s?
CapNMyers
i unfortunately cannot attend. make sure to have some damn good food for me!
MissouriBronco
Let’s do Joe’s! I want in!
The Whiskey Cat
Now that we have some more responses. Let’s go ahead and say that we will meet up at the original Joe’s so we don’t have to make a reservation at Jack Stack. Let’s meet at the Original Joe’s BBQ @
3002 W 47th St, Kansas City, KS 66103
at 7:30 (to give Mase extra time should he need it).
Respond here or shoot me an email Mase to confirm that that works for you. See y’all soon!
Andrew Mason
I’m in! Joe’s gas station at 7:30! Like Bart Scott said — can’t wait!

I guess I’ll try again, seventh time the charm! New subscriber but listening since week 17 of the Trevor Simien season! I’ll try to be brief!
1. All aboard the Lock Train! I have been telling friends (not bronco fans) all season that after Flacco is when the new Broncos begin. And here it is just in time for the holidays!
2. I cannot wait for the game against the Chiefs this week. Drew will shine.
3. For Mr B! and now Drew!
4. I was originally hating HARD on Scangs. But I am feeling better now! Maybe his issues with Flacco are because Flacco can’t do anything right! He is growing and I and everyone should give him more of a chance. Hopefully he and Drew can form an unbeatable team to complement Vic’s awesome defense. I just hope Scangs can figure out how to use Phil and Royce correctly! This was the one thing the previous coaching staff got right!
5. When I finally subscribed I forgot to put the promo code to vote for which Pod host. If it counts I would have put RK! I love all 3 of you equally but I credit RK for my new love of White Claw and Breck Brews. We were also being Keto Kids at the same time. But what really made me decide on RK was either this offseason or last, RK became the only person I have ever heard mention one of my favorite desserts ever! Strawberry Rhubarb pie/cobbler! By that I mean friends, podcasts, cooking shows… none of them ever mention Strawberry Rhubarb desserts! In Los Angeles I wouldn’t even know where to find Rhubarb. It is an amazing combination and everyone should try! I could eat it every day. When I was a kid living with my parents in Oregon they grew rhubarb and strawberries in the garden and made fresh cobbler from that! DELICIOUS! I remember sneaking bites of it cold right out of the pan in the fridge. It’s great cool or warm! With ice cream it’s even better (for you Zac)! Mase let us know if you have ever had the pleasure! If I ever own a restaurant it would be my featured dessert!
Keep up the great work guys! Sorry for the very long comment but I am not the type to comment every episode or even every week. Happy Holidays to the best pod community out there!
Andrew Mason
Happy holidays to you, too! Thanks for the kind words.

Mase-just wanted to let you know you are not alone on taking the wait-and-see approach on Lock. Maybe it’s a generational thing: we Gen-X folks are not known for rushing into committing to anything.
Don’t get me wrong, I have loved what I have seen from Lock so far, but consistency and the ability to overcome adversity are the real foundations that great quarterback play are built on in the NFL. That just takes time to find out.
Also, right there with you on Tebow. Tebow seems like a genuinely good guy, but he is also a relentless self-promoter. And a terrible quarterback.
Andrew Mason
I think you may be onto something re: the Gen-X thing. Ours is the generation of detached irony, using wiseass humor as a defense mechanism and being slow to trust. There is a reason why David Letterman was popular in the late 1980s and 1990s.
The Big T
Oi! Tebow was a terrible Passer, he wasn’t a terrible QB. What was his W/L record again? 🙂
The Tebowites promoted him, I don’t remember him being promoted much by himself? He wasn’t arrogant at all, and never bigged up his own game. Anti-Abortion TV Ads aside, obviously, but he never spoke about his own game in a positive way. He was humble, in fact still is.
Bronco_in_SD
if Drew Lock is the guy, Can you guys do a 2-3 round mock draft? Where do you go with 11? Interior DL, OT, WR? So many great options. and with 5 top 100 picks, if we get this draft right and sign some good free agents, WOW.
Also, I’m totally with you Mase. I like what I’ve seen from Drew, but come on guys. QBs flash in the pan alllll the time. We gotta see how he responds to adversity and need a bigger sample size.
Also, Drew makes the OL better, but maybe we are starting to see the Munchek effect. We all agreed it takes time.
Andrew Mason
You want BPA (best player available) to match up with need. So you take a look at the draft and market and attempt to discern which position is most likely to have multiple options in the draft, leaving at least one prospect you like to fall to you. At this moment I would bet on O-line in the draft.
The Big T
Whoever is there at 10 (we pick 10 now thanks to KC loss), will shape what we do in 2 and 3..
My latest two Mocks are this;
10. Tristan Wirfs (OT)
42. A.J. Terrell (CB)
74. K.J. Hill (WR)
86. Leki Fotu (IDL)
92. Donovan Peoples-Jones (WR)
10. Derrick Brown (IDL)
42. Austin Jackson (OT)
74. K.J. Hill (WR)
86. Lloyd Cushenberry III (IOL)
92. Darnay Holmes (CB)
The Big T
Mase, can you explain your man-crush on Tyler Biadasz a bit more? Wouldn’t it be better to wait and pickup Lloyd Cushenberry III in Round 3? I know it’s a specialist skill, being in the trenches, and hard for us to properly judge them, but Biadasz doesn’t seem that much better than Cushenberry than me? Is it based mainly on the fact he’s a Badger and their great O-Line tradition?
Oh, and I haven’t let your Tebow comment from last week slide, just temporarily have. I’ll come back to that later in the week when I have more time to comment. Be prepared!
