Is Lock really that bad of an NFL QB and is Mahommes really that good?
To my untrained eye, Lock has a big arm with nice touch and similar arm talent, and similar decision-making.
The biggest difference is that everyone on the Chiefs seems to be schemed wide open more consistently, and Mahommes has benefit of veteran skill position players that make plays when he isn’t perfect; and Chiefs o-line is actually very good.

I feel like Lock or Darnold (or any QB with average intelligence and great physical tools) would be nearly or just as good as Mahommes in that Chiefs offense. If Mahommes were QB for the Broncos, do you guys really think we’d be that much better? Our OCs always seem to be trying to force QB into their offense and make them do more than they’re ready for, whereas most other young successful QBs have had OCs who make it as easy for them as possible and design offense all around them (eg Wentz, Jackson, Murray, Goff); I know that most of those guys have elite tools in 1-2 domains, but some reports imply that McVay was telling Goff the defensive reads pre play, and Wentz is supposedly terrible now, but was a legit MVP candidate a few years ago? Does that make sense? IDK, just seems like outside of Rogers and Wilson, every QB is highly scheme dependent and if you’ve got a guy who’s got special arm talent, they’re going to take time to develop into a dominant player. I contend that Mahommes is fools gold and skews our perception of young QBs…he would be terrible on the Jets (look how pedestrian he looked during games where he was pressured consistently).

I don’t think Lock has better arm talent than Mahommes, but I seriously question the notion that Lock is a total bum (and we should move on from him) and Mahommes is HOF, GOAT level; I just think skill sets are closer than media suggests and lots of QBs would look amazing in the Chiefs offense. Maybe I’m wrong, but same argument with Josh Allen; would he be an MVP candidate on the Broncos or Jets, etc? I think he and Mahommes could be after a few years in an offense, but who knows after you they get hit a hundred times and throw picks bc they’re not on the same page with WRs, etc…Lock has made some great, high level throws on par with the aforementioned (and some
Rookie type boneheaded throws as well), difference is Broncos young receivers don’t make the tough catches and move-the-chain catches and so narrative is Lock sucks; meanwhile Mahommes threw what should’ve been a game-losing pick last week, which was dropped, but hit a wide open WR next play, so his decision-making and QB skill is unparalleled? QBs need time and continuity to be great in NFL; Lock has physical tools to be very good, but any QB we put back there is going to look bad unless our whole offensive scheme gets better and executes consistently, and the traits that take a QBs play to the next level are veteran traits and experience, and consistency.

I also think you guys might be underestimating Lock missing Sutton as a security blanket. Mahommes throws all the risky throws bc he’s never been burned, it always works out; he’s playing with ultimate confidence; Lock is second guessing everything out there bc there’s zero margin to error, and even then our future HOF rookie WR might still drop it and make him look like a bad QB.

Just don’t think Lock is the near dumpster fire Broncos country is suggesting; no QB in the league just shows up and balls out with a ton of help and other guys making him look good, and some time and consistency…am I wrong?

What is the flaw that a Q cannot improve, if there is one? (Application: does Drew have it?)

Hey guys
I remeber the first time I heard you was when you delivered the news that Paxton Lynch was cut. It felt like hope and optimism was in the horizon. Now after a lot of hot pocket, best water, salmon cooking and holes in a straw discussions still can’t feel that hope is anywhere near.

Howdy Gents,

Happy new year! For 2021 I just want to see a complete and competent offense. With all of the QB talk, Stafford does not excite me. I don’t want an oft-injured and QB from a losing culture.

I’ve thought about this since the Saints game…I wish the game plan for that game was let McManus kick a field goal every drive and get that record he wants. Also, would be a nice small reward to see Hinton get a jersey as a WR for the final game.

Thanks for the pod as always.

Happy 2021 everybody, the year Mad Max took place, can’t wait to hunt some cannibals!

I know a breakdown of Lock’s first 16 games has already happened but I’d like to re-look that with stats adjusted for 16 FULL games, discounting Pittsburgh.
Here’s his first full 16 game stats
3,594 yards + 225 rushing
24 TDs (3 of those rushing)
18 INT
59.3% completion

Those yards would place him 10th all time for a rookie, between Jim Kelly and Dak, only four spots below Peyton. Guys I’ll take that any day. I know the box numbers don’t tell the whole story but the only name above him on that list taken outside round 1 is Dak. I think we have a lot more here than we are giving credit for because of our W-L record. And with Drew thats 8-8 during games he’s started and finished (calm down Mase I counted those as team stats!). Here’s another quick fact, the top three QBs for Rookie yards had TD-INTs of 23-18, 21-17, and 22-15 respectively and I don’t think Luck, Newton, or Winston are total busts as rookies. I think we are on the right track, add in some competent clock management against Tennessee and some glue to Juedy’s gloves at we are looking at 9-7 or 10-6. I think we are doing fine, and much better off than we were with anyone else under center in the last few years.

Now take into account that he did that while essentially learning a new system without OTAs midway through his first year. Imagine switching OCs during your bye week. I’ve heard people comparing Lock to Tua, Burrow, and Herbert but that fails to acknowledge that those teams had OC continuity. While the QBs had to learn a new system their teammates were there to help carry them and keep them on the right track. That can’t be discounted.

To sum it up I think we aren’t as bad off as the record shows. Give Lock a proper offseason when he has OTAs to talk to Shurmur about what he does and doesn’t like in the playbook and I think our offense is going to have a new look next year. I’m optimistic even if Elway and Ellis are trying to sink this ship!

Stay healthy everyone, and maybe stock up on Pop tarts and hot pockets, this apocalypse gonna be LIT!

Sorry for the double comment but I forgot to add one stat! I know people like to add in dropped interceptions but you can’t do that without noting that Mahones leads the league there with 16. Maybe Drew ain’t so bad after all!

I’m more convinced now than ever that the Broncos won’t be competitive in the division until a major change happens. I am a Lock believer, but he needs coaching, along with Jeudy, Hamler, Fant, etc. Elway won a Super Bowl with an offensive coach, but aside from that year, Elway has hired exclusively defensive coaches. Fox, Joseph and Fangio are great for the defense, but none of them are going to develop a strong offense, and Shurmur has proven that he’s rooted too deep in smash mouth, old school football to take advantage of the explosive talent we have. The constant runs on 2nd and long, the run-run-pass, the dives up the middle with Phillip Lindsay. We can get all the talent we want, but nothing is gonna change if we don’t reimagine the identity of the team (coaching included) to FIT the talent.

Rant over. Thanks for all you guys do, and happy draft season!
