Hey guys long time no comment. First off I’d like to give a huge shout out to you guys and the rest of the community for all of the amazing conversations over this past year (can you believe I am writing this on the anniversary of the NBA shut down?) you have made this year feel at least a little normal.

Second, I would like to say congrats! Each of you have just been promoted to be the GM of your very own football team. The very first thing you need to decide is how resources are allocated to each position. What would be your general philosophies?

For example, over the past few years I have grown fond of the strong investments in securing the trenches and from there investing in QB. How say you?

2 questions…

Has juwan james retired yet?

And

Is there an expectation the NFL offers a 2nd covid relief for players?

Zac doing an Australian accent made me think of Zachary Levi doing an impression of Yvonne Strahovski’s Australian accent. Knowing you’re a fan of Chuck Zac, it’s worth watching. Just search Zachary impersonates Yvonne and it’s the first result, a quick 1-minute vid.

Anyway, as the resident ‘expert’ on freeing Phillip Lindsay from his poor usage and bad coaching, I pray we keep Lindsay. It’s $3 million, just restructure the contracts of some back-ups, it’s not hard. Teams find ways to make 10, 20, 30 million appear when they need and you can’t squeeze 3 million a pop to tender some great players at a discount?

I’m waiting to see if I can buy a Lindsay jersey, he’s a hometown favorite (even though I’ve never been in Colorado). They must know they’ll see a return on their investment in fan loyalty/appreciation and actual money coming in if they sign Lindsay that you don’t necessarily get for every player.

I’m a nerd of many flavors and so I was listening to an economics podcast. My mind quickly returned to thinking about NFL quarterbacks though because all roads lead to Deshaun Watson.

The NFL has spent the last several years creating a quarterback friendly game. It started with the desire for a flashy passing game but then safety concerns kept adding to it. This has created a major supply and demand problem.

This podcast, the shadow GM of the Broncos, has offered nearly any price for Watson. That sounds like inflation to me. What really sounds like inflation though is Prescott getting $40 million per year. And here I thought Flacco got overpaid after that super bowl!

The NFL can fix this in one of two ways. They can reduce demand by changing the rules to be less quarterback friendly. That seems unlikely though.

The only other option I can think of would be to create a developmental league. They need to increase the supply of viable quarterbacks. They need to cut inflation!

Right now too many teams are uncompetitive because they don’t have a quarterback. Players at other positions make less because the quarterback eats up all the cap space. Teams force quarterbacks onto the field early because once they get past that first contract become unaffordable. None of that is good.

Also, everybody take a drink for the cost controlled quarterback!

Any sense of what the NFL is doing about this right now? This probably isn’t something to do in a pandemic but maybe in 22 or 23?

Apologies for a double post but one last quick aside. I subscribed to DNVR last year when the pandemic hit. I needed to back off my political podcasts and find some calm. Thank you for being a part of what’s kept me sane this past year.

My wife just got her just Pfizer shot yesterday and I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. So stay safe guys in these last few months. I’ll definitely be looking for you at the DNVR bar next time I’m in town.

No question, just a little trivia for Mase. Remember the now defunct NFL Europe? Well they helped produce 2 Super Bowl winning QBs. Can you name the QBs and NFL Europe teams they played for?
