Great minds think alike, I guess. I wrote a similar piece two weeks ago that was just about how much of a responsibility Elway has. And I believe he has a lot of it, mainly because he’s inability to scout a good QB, thinking physical traits should go above everything else, and scouting other talents in the draft.

2017 was a good draft, though. Let’s hope things will look more clear from now on.

Andre doesn’t seem to be in the know on some key points. Here are a couple things that I think are pretty evident:

1) Recruiting Peko seems to have bolstered the D-line even beyond the Jackson days and the play of Gotsis and Harris have been nice surprises. The one year drop in production after losing Jackson is over. 2) Gotsis is “low mileage” just like Bolles, after short high school and college careers, so the upside is pretty good given the terrible grind on the body those positions entail. 3) Campbell was a pipe dream given salary cap pressures. If they could have paid Campbell they could have paid Jackson. 4) Garcia was a terrible choice; almost as bad as Sambrailo. 5) No mention of how subjective and emotional Elway’s decision-making process tends to be most of the time. His decisions concerning drafting the Brockweiler, firing Fox, hiring Kubiak, drafting Lynch, not hiring Shanahan, not keeping Wade Phillips and hiring Joseph were all highly emotional. If he could have been truly objective, those decisions would have gone the other way. 6) Elway seems to provide an attractive open door that has worked well when it comes to undrafted free-agents. He’s made up for some of his bad draft picks with free-agent finds. If he was smart, he’d objectively look at his personnel track record and start to trade down or trade draft picks for quality veterans. 7) Elway tries to save money in the wrong places. For example, there’s no salary cap on coach’s salaries. The Broncos are enormously profitable. Paying for top coaching is worth every penny.
