A team has a chance to get a premier-level quarterback about once a decade and the Broncos whiffed. All this means is that they will either bargain hunt in the later rounds or try to make us believe they can turn chicken feathers into chicken soup. Vic wants to recreate the 1985 Bears but the way the league works now, that ain’t happening. Vic and Shurmer are stuck in the last decade and need to shuffle off to the nursing home and the Broncos need to get with the go-go programs that win now. If you don’t have a QB, you can’t win in the league. Five wins next year are aspirational.

I don’t disagree with the concern that we are banking on defense winning a championship. But I’m wondering about the whiff at QB you’re talking about – Tebow, Paxton Lynch, or last night? Because Tebow and Paxton were both big whiffs and happened in the past 10 years. Not drafting Fields? Not sure that’s really a whiff because they didn’t even take the chance. It’s possible that he will become the “premier-level” QB you mention, but no guarantee and it is seemingly just as possible he will be a “whiff” for the Bears.

In the four ’16-’19 drafts (’20 too fresh), there were 14 QBs selected in the 1st round. I’d say four were pure whiffs (Lynch, Trubisky, Rosen, Haskins), four are still questions (Wentz, Goff, Darnold, Jones), and only five (Mahomes, Watson, Mayfield, Jackson, Murray) are “premier-level.” So 35% are premier-level. And Jones, Trubisky, Rosen, Goff, Wentz were all taken in top 10, so no guarantee if you draft higher.

I just think its absurd to judge this pick now. Could it come back around and look like an idiot move? Sure, but only 35% chance of that based on recent data. So I’m good with the Surtain pick for now, but maybe just my orange colored bias making a case. Ultimately, I’m with Mase, when will our QB hangover end?????
