If Barkley falls to 5, the Broncos would be crazy not to take him.

Love it. Get the QB of the future and still get some OL help. AWESOME article.

Thanks Ryan, glad you enjoyed it! get ready for plenty more draft content from now until May.

Mark Andrews would be a steal at 71, the only thing that he isn’t quite up to par on is his run blocking…is this something Denver Is ok with?

Hi Christian,
I gotta say I see a few too many drops from Andrews too. I was a bit underwhelmed by his combine also. He would be a great value pick at 71 even if he’s not a great blocker. Heuerman and Butt are good enough blocking that I think he’d compliment them.

I am still on the train, the Broncos are going to pass on a QB this draft (or at least not in the first 2, maybe 3, rounds) If Elway is in the “win now” mind set still, then Barkley (if available) or Nelson at 5 is the way to go. If the Giants don’t pick a QB at 2 (unlikely, but a possibility) and Barkley and Nelson are gone at 5, then maybe the Broncos should look at QB. Going defense here is unnecessary with the class depth and team depth. For me. Barkley, Nelson or the last top 4 QB. Not a fan of mock drafts, but I agree with Andre for the most part, unlike a few of the other mock drafts seen on nfl.com. Some of those are just plain ridiculous (would say another word, but keeping it family friendly).

I don’t disagree with your logic, but a G or RB at #5 is crazy high. I’m not hating on Barkley but he ran for 35 against Rutgers, 63 against MI St(a loss), 44 against Ohio St (loss) and 56 against Ind. if you are taking a RB that high he has to be a difference maker extraordinaire, can you tell me that his impact is going to be higher than say Michel or Guice both guys slated for later in the draft. If your plan is to take a RB at 5 I would just as soon trade back.

RB and G at 5 is high, but either of those two players SHOULD make an immediate improvement to the offense. The offense is what needs the help first. Protecting the QB should be top which, for me, is why I think Nelson should be picked at 5. The only G that I like as much is Will Hernandez (UTEP – I spent 3 years in El Paso and got to see Hernandez in a few games) and some like Wynn, but none will be available at #40. As for RB, yes you might get Michel, Guice, or (Nick) Chubb at #40 so I am okay with passing up Barkley at 5 if Nelson isn’t available. I think Barkley is a huge improvement over Devonte Booker and a slight improvement over C.J. Anderson so it is just another weapon on offense that is going to help Keenum and the Broncos as a whole. Improving the offense now seems to be what Elway and the organization is looking to do. Picking a QB at 5 is a possible long term fix.

Who would you (JDC15) pick at 5?

I agree with you, I don’t understand the Broncos fascination with Booker at all. I also think the Broncos o-line isn’t as bad as everybody thought outside of Watson. The qb play was so putrid last year that they made the o-line look worse than they were, good qb’s get rid of the ball faster, check out of bad plays and know when to just throw the ball away. Is Keenum that guy? That’s the $36M question. Regardless of the answer you don’t pass on an opportunity to get a franchise qb, so assuming the top 4 IMO go Darnold, Rosen, Allen, Fitzpatrick, I go Mayfield. If Keenum has a stud season, Mayfield doesn’t see the field retains his trade value and you can trade him. If he flames then Mayfield plays. The last thing I want to see is Keenum flame out and Paxton take the field. What I think is going to happen is they are going to take Nelson.

Love the discussion here guys, I think you both make good points. I do think that the guard and interior OL class is really deep, same as the RB class, meaning I think Denver could wait and load up between rounds 2-through-5 on offensive talent.
I’m a big believer in taking the best available high, especially with a top 5 pick, which is why this mock is a simple prediction not what I would do.
Love the points you both made though, keep it coming!

Ok if this is what you want to happen. Cool. But, just for a minute consider you are possibly the only one mocking Nelson outside of the top 8, you are wrong. Also, consider how many inside linebackers make $10 million a year? Not many. That 5th year on those guys will be in the 12-14 range. And the gap between decent and dominant ILbs is smaller than ever against today’s offense’s. Likely only 1 of these backers is worthy of a huge contract. And since they don’t rush the passer for a living, I think it’s plain idiotic. Ranked in order of importance in today’s game.
1. QB
2. People who sack the QB
3. People who protect the QB

I hardly think teams losing 10 games a year have all these things figured out. In my book as good as he is, Barkley is a luxury, especially in a deep RB class, no one in the top 10 can afford. QBs, Nelson, Chubb are the top 6 for me, and I’m guessing Vita Vea is someone being over looked as a top 10 pick. Edmunds is the only 1 I would consider inthe top 15. Why? Because he projects to be able to rush the passer a bit. Barkley will go 4 at the latest because the Browns have their QB already. Just my thoughts. Nelson is the guy for the Broncos if the QB isn’t there. Thanks for your hard work.

Hey, appreciate the feedback, and no this isn’t what I want to happen it’s how I’m projecting the draft will go 6 weeks out.
I’m aware Nelson is a bit low, but consider the teams picking after Denver and before Miami where I have him going.
The Colts would take him but I think they’d select Chubb first and possibly Barkley. The Browns and Raiders have two of the highest paid guard pairs in the NFL on their rosters. The Bucs are paying JR Sweezy a bunch and have Ali Marpet and Ryan Jensen, so three interior OL who are quite talented and Jensen and Marpet are still quite young.
Nelson doesn’t fit Shanny’s scheme nor does it make sense for them to pick a guard that high in San Fran, that’s just not a philosophy zone blocking offenses usually utilize.
So that leaves Chicago who I think will prioritize their needs in the secondary. They’re also paying Kyle Long a bunch, and typically if you’re investing that high a pick on a guard you want him to play RG where he takes on more 1-on-1s, you can usually get by with a mediocre LG who’s usually doubling up with the center making life easier.
So that’s just how the cookie crumbled. As I wrote in the mock, I can see the Broncos taking him but that doesn’t mean he’s a lock to go in the top 10. Consider it’s also a really deep and talented guard class, so if teams in the top 10 decide to wait that wouldn’t surprise me.
As mentioned with the Vea pick, we’ve seen DTs slide the last couple drafts as long as they’re not pass rushing specialists like Aaron Donald or Sheldon Rankins, which Vea isn’t.
I believe Edmunds will go high, I’m not as convinced about Smith but it just seems like the NFL likes him more than I do. They’re also both only 19 with incredibly high upside.
That’s just how I see things unfolding but there’s plenty of time to change my mind, it’s a fluid situation, the draft always is.

I would like to see a mock draft of what you would do if you were in each GM’s shoes. It would be interesting to see how it differs from this mock of what you think will happen.

Good idea Christian. It would be pretty close to my big board which I’m working on updating now, but once you factor in needs would be interesting. I might just do that in April, thanks for the suggestion!

I like Baker at 5 if he’s there with Bradley Chubb as next choice to take some of the attention away from Von.

If both of those are gone, I’d like to move down, maybe to 12&22 if a QB the Bills like is still there are use both picks on the OL: McGlinchy first; Hernandez or Wynn lower down.

Then in second round I like Nick Chubb as a downhill runner and, if Barrett’s tender is picked up, Lorenzo Carter to replace him as an edge rusher.

3rd round, would like to see route running WR as they seem to transition to the pros better.

Agreed on your top two options assuming the two QBs from SoCal are gone, right?
I think the right QB has to be around for Denver to find a trade down partner, especially with Buffalo who I hear isn’t willing to trade away their top two picks for Mayfield.
I’m not as high on McGlinchey, but he’d fit as a RT. Nick Chubb would be great as long as the medical staff checks him out. Carter intrigues me but I worry after the combine he’ll go high, meaning you take him in the top 50 or he’s gone which might be a bit rich for me.
Thanks for interacting, loving home much discussion the mock is creating!
