You don’t draft a guard at 5. At 5 you draft a difference maker. Say with me, QB at 5 or trade up to get the qb you want. The rules are different for qb’s hence the reason the Top 17, SEVENTEEN, paid players in the NFL are qbs. You end up as a good team drafting in the top 5 maybe once a decade. If there is a franchise qb to be had you have to do get him, and with a supposed 4 potential franchise qbs do you really want to play the qb carousel hoping some also ran all the sudden is a reincarnation of 7 or 18, like the Browns, Jets, Bills, Dolphins, Jags, and Bears have done? In your heart of hearts can anybody say with an ounce of sincerity they see Case Keenum leading the Broncos to a Super Bowl? So say no to a G and get a QB.

I don’t see it completly like that. I think there is plenty of opportunity to get a great Franchise player at number 5. I think moving down gets you players but not game changers that are their in that position. If we do not move up to get our guy then you have to look at Chubb or Barkly. I think these guys are just too good of a talent to sit back and get less impactful players.

This is not based on my feeling where the Broncos should do in the draft, but just focusing on the question about Nelson being a top 5 pick.

If this is only concerning the Broncos and their draft pick positions, then maybe Nelson if a 5th round pick choice. Throughout the last few weeks Andre, Ryan and Zac have discussed how this is a deep G class. Is it really? There are a few high caliber Guards (Nelson, Hernandez, Wynn, and Price) but they are more than likely going to be gone by the time pick 40 comes around. If the Broncos have a need at G, then yes Nelson IS worth the 5th pick in order to help strengthen the O-Line. Seeing the film on Nelson makes me believe he is good enough now to be in that pick, but that is what the coaching staff on the Broncos are for. Making him better. If the coaching staff can’t make someone of Nelson’s caliber better, then we need a new coaching staff.

Now, as for my own thoughts on if the Broncos should pick Nelson at 5. No. The organization did well in the offseason to help make the O-line better just enough to wait a few rounds to choose a guard. There are definitely more options the Broncos should pick at 5 over Nelson. If one of the previously mentioned Guards at available at 40 then I think they should jump on it!

Love the internal debate Spacebar.
I think the discussion on Nelson is more based on the film room above, where I’d say he’s maybe a tad overrated at this point as an all-time great guard prospect.
The class is definitely deep and it’s beyond the four names you cited, here’s our top 10 at the position, I’ll have a preview of the guards and centers up soon (most of the centers could play guard.)
