I don’t know if you have seen this but NFL.com Cynthia Frelund disagrees with you. What do you think about her comments towards James? They basically counter everything that you said. I just want to know your response?

Hey Litvakski,

Great question! I’m not sure she disagrees with me outside of the sacks stats, she used PFF I used STATS (which you can find on the Washington Post website right here: http://stats.washingtonpost.com/fb/playerstats.asp?id=27547) they’re reliable and I’ve found them to be more transparent with such stats than PFF.

Our main disagreement stems from how we are analyzing James, I’m basing my analysis on the film while she’s going off of her analytics and putting it into the context of his contract.

I don’t think there’s much context to what she’s talking about with the push-back stats. If James keeps a rusher at bay when they go wide but backs up 3 yards is that accounted for? how does it account for the quick passing game? I couldn’t tell you the answers I just think she’s looking at the stats she has (which I’m sure are valid) without putting them into a greater context.

As I mentioned in the intro, rather than track every play he had in Miami (like I’ve done with all the Broncos through the season) I simply watched him against the best pass rushers he faced and I explained he allowed two sacks, one to Watt one to Hunter. The push-back stats could help explain what I found about him not using his hands, not being the aggressor, and playing too upright.

I think they’re simply two different points of view, there are plenty of deficiencies to James’ game but also lots to like if put in this system and coached up by Munchak.

Hope that helps explain it but really loved this question, thanks for reaching out and reading. Imo this is why our community is so great, you guys think this stuff through.

Man, you were right to point out his lack of nastiness…several of the clips he seems content on just bumping a defender out of the way, instead of pancaking them. Imagine what Indy’s Nelson would’ve done in a simulation situation…?

Although, it’s easy to get caught up in trying to see what a player “doesn’t do well” instead of seeing everything that they “can do.” I’m thrilled to see if Munchak can help James get to another level because he does bring a lot to the table.

After YEARS of OL struggles and Band-Aids (Watson, Stephenson, etc) I’m excited that FA has brought a building block to the trenches. Fingers crossed on health ?

Price? Who cares…he’s worth what we paid him for 2 years IMO…if he can turn the page, years 3/4 will be very sensible costs given what the cap will be by then.
