The saying goes that “defense wins championships” but the best teams in league history were nearly always balanced teams. All three phases — offense, defense and special teams — need to be from good to great.

Still Belichick has the right idea. Build a good, but balanced offense so you can adapt to the strengths and weakness of your opponent’s defense and you will win a lot of games. You also need to adapt when a players is having a bad day. The times when Brady had a bad day during a clutch game oftentimes meant the rest of Patriots didn’t rise to the occasion and they would lose. The Patriots are possibly too dependent on Brady.

Having a good but not great QB like Siemian means the rest of the Broncos know they have to be on their game if they expect to win. Siemian may get there someday but right now he’s not going to take over a game and win it like a Montana or Brady could do.
