The Denver Broncos traded out of the fifth round earlier in the day to move down to 176th overall, the first pick of the sixth round. With that selection, they drafted fullback Andy Janovich from the University of Nebraska.
Gary Kubiak, in his second year as head coach, certainly is trying to turn his offense back towards a running, balanced style he built his reputation on. Janovich, as a fullback, certainly represents that.
“I’m just really excited to come in and be a part of the team and contribute in any way I can, whether it is special teams or fullback,” Janovich said moments after being drafted Saturday.
Janovich played in every game from his sophomore season on and ranked fourth on the team in rushing yards in 2015 with 265 according to the Huskers’ team site. He has also been a big contributor on special teams throughout his college career. In 2015 he tallied 11 solo tackles and 13 stops on special teams.
“Special teams this past year was really just a huge part of my role,” he explained. “If special teams is the way I can contribute that is what I will do. I can’t wait to come in and compete with everybody.”
He is a native of Nebraska and graduated from Gretna High School while also being named to the first-team All-Nebraska team as a linebacker by the Omaha-World Herald.
The Broncos seem to have drafted versatile players known for their impressive work ethic in days two and three of the draft and Janovich seems to fit that bill.
“I’m a little more versatile (than other fullbacks),” he said when asked about a few explosive plays he made this season. “I’m not just going out there and blocking people, I can run the ball too, catch and do multiple things. I think that’s a really big part of the game.”
