Broncos Prospect Profile: Cam Robinson, LT, Alabama

Throughout the offseason, we’ll be profiling players who may end up in Denver when all is said and done with the 2017 NFL Draft. The Broncos clearly have plenty of holes to fill before they get back to Super-Bowl form and we’ll be examining a long list of players they may choose to help the franchise do just that.

The ultra-talented Cam Robinson has been among the nation’s best tackles dating all the way back to high school. As a high schooler, Robinson was an All-American, five-star college recruit, during his three years at the University of Alabama, Robinson was named a Freshman All-American, two-time first-team All-SEC and a consensus All-American. Entering the 2017 NFL draft, Robinson remains one of the nation’s elite tackles.

While his value has slipped over the past few months, many still believe that Robinson is the best tackle in the draft, going anywhere from the early teens to the second round. In a draft class that is relatively weak in offensive tackles, the Denver Broncos may have their top choice of the group at No. 20 overall, with Robinson being in the heart of the discussion. If Denver goes his way, here is the type of player they will be getting.

Strengths

At 6-foot-6, 327 pounds there isn’t much not to like about Robinson’s physical gifts, especially since he pairs his big frame with unique athletic ability. Along with his physical gifts, Robinson is a grinder, bringing it on every play and playing through the whistle.

On the field, Robinson is an elite run blocker, and would likely be one of the best run blockers in the NFL the moment he entered the league. He already possesses NFL strength and power, which would allow him to step into a starting role the moment he is drafted.

Weaknesses

What keeps Robinson from being a top-five pick is his ability in pass protection. While his run blocking abilities have little to no questions marks, it’s his struggles in the passing game that make him vulnerable. Although he can improve in multiple areas in the passing game, Robinson has all of the physical abilities to become an above average pass blocker at the next level.

The biggest concern for NFL teams regarding Robinson may be his off the field issues. Last May, he and a teammate were arrested due to possession of marijuana and a stolen gun found in the vehicle they were in. Although the charges were dropped later in the year, it is certain that NFL teams will take a deeper look into Robinson’s character and past.

How he fits in Denver

It’s no secret that the Broncos desperately need help along the offensive line and Robinson may very well be the best tackle in the draft. If he falls to Denver at No. 20 overall, it may be very difficult for John Elway to pass up on this top talent.

In Denver, Robinson would be a day-one starter most likely at left tackle, the position he was a consensus All-American last season at Alabama. Along with being an upgrade on the offensive line, Robinson would bring a much needed nasty attitude to the rest of the line. Robinson walks the fine line of playing with an edge and to the end of the whistle, while not being a dirty player.
