ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos have made their first major change in the coaching ranks in 2017, firing offensive coordinator Mike McCoy Monday morning.
Denver promoted quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave to offensive coordinator to fill McCoy’s duties.
The moves come after the team lost their sixth-straight game and have failed to find an offensive rhythm since Week 2—the last time they scored 24 points or more. The Broncos’ offense ranks as the ninth-worst scoring offense, averaging 18.3 points per game, and a mere 14.2 points per game in their six-game losing streak.
McCoy’s second-stint as the team’s offensive coordinator lasted just 10 games. Last week, Broncos’ head coach Vance Joseph said the team needed a more simplistic offensive game plan, but after the results didn’t change on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals, the rookie head coach decided to move on from McCoy in his first season back as Denver’s offensive coordinator.
Musgrave, a Colorado native and former Broncos player, takes over the Broncos’ offense in his first year with team. He began coaching in the NFL in 1997 and has been an offensive coordinator with the Philadelphia Eagles, the Carolina Panthers, the University of Virginia, the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Minnesota Vikings and most recently the Oakland Raiders in 2015 and 2016.
With the Raiders in 2016, Musgrave constructed the league’s seventh-best scoring offense, averaging 26 points per game. Fittingly, Musgrave’s first game leading the Broncos’ offense will be on Sunday against his former team.
The Broncos promoted Klint Kubiak—former head coach Gary Kubiak’s son—from offensive assistant to quarterbacks coach.
