ENGLEWOOD, Colo – As part of their final cuts, the Denver Broncos reportedly have released quarterback Mark Sanchez and running back Ronnie Hillman. The team had spent the better part of the day attempting to find trade partners for both players. When nothing materialized, the decision to release them was made.
Adam Schefter first reported news of Sanchez’s release and Mike Klis first reported the Hillman news.
Sanchez was acquired in a spring trade with the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a conditional seventh-round selection. With Sanchez’s release, the Broncos not only no longer owe that draft pick to the Eagles but also save $4.5 million in salary cap space. The team is expected to bring in a third quarterback.
Hillman, the Broncos leading rusher last season, amassed 1,845 yards in his four-year career with them Broncos. While he averaged a solid 4.1 yards per carry during his time in Denver, the third-round pick out of San Diego State never quite lived up to the homerun-hitter hype that surrounded his selection.
The team still needs to release five more players to reach the 53 they are allowed, follow our roster tracker to find out who else gets the chop.
