Broncos Film Room: Why Jerry Jeudy is the key that unlocks Denver's offense

From thinking they’d have to trade up to having their guy drop into their lap, the Denver Broncos made out like bandits on the opening night of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Jeudy was the eighth-ranked prospect on our draft board, carrying a first-round grade as the second-best receiver in a historic class with 20 wideouts grading out as future NFL starters. The value of getting a player of such caliber with the 15th pick can’t be understated, as it could significantly alter the Broncos offensive trajectory and be remembered as a turning point for the franchise when we look back on this selection.

After having studied Jeudy and the other top receivers in the class here’s what we found with his strengths, weaknesses, and fit with the Broncos.

Note: the scouting report is taken from the 2020 DNVR Draft Guide, Jeudy’s report was written by Jake Schwanitz.

Strengths

  • A technician at wide receiver with excellent route running and release skills.
  • Very good speed, agility and run-after-the-catch ability.

  • Good size at 6-foot-1, 193 pounds with room to fill out his frame.
  • Best route runner in the class with slot versatility.
  • Consistently manipulates defenders’ leverage with his feet, eyes and body.
  • Naturally separates from defenders at all levels of the field.
  • Wins with speed and the natural ability to stop, start and get vertical.

  • Good catch radius with the flexibility to snatch balls low, high and in front of his frame.
  • Very versatile. Can play in the slot and out wide.
  • Tough player that is willing to block and drop his shoulder with the ball in his hands.

Weaknesses

  • Wasn’t the most sure-handed receiver on his team, dropping balls that he allowed too close into his body and in some contested-catch situations.
  •  Most drops can be classified as concentration drops.
  • Will allow some defenders to get into his chest in blocking situations thus not being able to control the defender.
  • Lacks wiggle in tight spaces.

Broncos Fit

Jerry Jeudy is a plug-and-play starter for the Denver Broncos. He can contribute out of the slot and at Z receiver playing a similar role to former Bronco Emmanuel Sanders. Jeudy was often used in motion at Alabama and could be utilized in a similar fashion in the NFL to determine coverages and tilt the field in his team’s favor. He can stretch the field vertically, work intermediate and short routes while getting open at all three levels.
