While the Denver Broncos saw several players join other teams to the shock and dismay of Broncos Country, Donald Stephenson quietly joined the Super Bowl 50 Champions Wednesday afternoon.
The offensive tackle that originally joined the Chiefs as the 74th overall pick in 2012, had heavy interest from several team’s across the NFL. According to his agent, Ken Sarnoff, they spoke with 14 different teams that were inquiring about his services. He ultimately chose Denver for two reasons.
“He felt it was the best organization, they are the defending champions and it is a great city,” Sarnoff said Tuesday evening. “He wants to start and he believes he can come there and do that. So, he’s fired up.”
Sarnoff would not elaborate on which teams were truly in contention with the Broncos for his services but did say that, although the Chiefs still have question marks along their offensive line, that a return to Kansas City was not an option.
BSN Denver has confirmed that Stephenson’s contract is worth $14 million dollars, $10 million guaranteed.
Stephenson, a former Oklahoma Sooner, has started just 21 games in his four seasons in the NFL and has had some struggles along the way. Stephenson never reached his potential with the Chiefs for a variety of reasons. A performance-enhancing drug suspension, competition at the tackle position within his team and an ankle injury hampered his progress. He will come in and immediately compete for a starting job at either tackle position but poses the biggest threat to either Michael Schofield or Ty Sambrailo at right tackle.
He is flying to Denver and will hold a press conference at UCHealth Training Center today. He will introduce himself to his new team and the local media at that time.
