After much speculation that the Broncos would be in the market for a quarterback in the early rounds of last week’s draft, they didn’t pick a signal caller until the seventh round. Many believe this is a vote of confidence in Brock Osweiler as the future quarterback. Osweiler is entering the final year of his rookie deal but Denver may look to extend him this offseason.
Although he hasn’t gotten an opportunity to play much, Osweiler seems to be entering his fourth season almost as if he was a seasoned vet. He has been reaching out to the Broncos new draft picks, welcoming them to Denver including new Broncos offensive lineman Ty Sambrailo. “Brock Osweiler texted me this morning and just said, ‘We’re excited to get to work and glad to have you.’” Sambrailo also said he heard from current starting quarterback Peyton Manning, but its good to see Osweiler already taking the next step in a leadership role.
There have been many comparisons made between Osweiler’s potential in Gary Kubiak’s offense, and what Joe Flacco did for Kubiak last year. With a similar build to Osweiler, Flacco threw for 3,986 yards and 27 touchdowns in 2014, both career high marks. John Elway recently called Osweiler “perfect for this offense” and said the team drafted him for a reason in 2012.
Denver did add quarterback Trevor Siemian in the seventh round, but he was likely selected to be added competition for third year quarterback Zac Dysert than for Osweiler. It appears the Broncos have a plan B after all, and it stands for Brock.
