ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos have locked down their lock-down cornerback.

Pat Surtain II and the Broncos agreed to a four-year, $96 million extension with $77.5 million guaranteed, a source told DNVR. The extension easily makes Surtain the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.

Before Surtain’s extension, Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander was the NFL’s highest-paid cornerback at $21 million per year. Surtain’s average of $24 million on his new deal easily surpasses that number.

Additionally, the $77.5 million guaranteed set a record for the most guaranteed money in NFL history for a cornerback.

At just 24 years old, Surtain has established himself as the top cornerback in the NFL. In his three years in the league, Surtain has been named a First-team All-Pro and a two-time Pro Bowler.

The Broncos didn’t wait to sign Surtain to an extension either. Earlier this year, after his third season was completed, Surtain became eligible to sign an extension with Denver. Days before his fourth season officially kicked off, the team and Surtain agreed to the record-setting deal.

A source told DNVR negotiations officially began the final week of August and the deal was agreed to late Tuesday night. The deal took just over one week to finalize.

Surtain will be tied to the Broncos for an additional four more years and will have an opportunity to sign another extension when he’s just 28 years old.
