BREAKING: Nuggets agree to contract with free agent Paul Millsap

The Denver Nuggets have reportedly agreed to a contract with free agent Paul Millsap, according to The Vertical’s Shams Charania.

The deal is reportedly for $90 million over three years. There is a team option on the third year, according to Matt Moore of CBS Sports.

Millsap, 32, had been high on the Nuggets’ free agent target list all summer after Denver nearly traded for the four-time All-Star on multiple occasions over the past year. The 6-foot-8 power forward averaged 18.1 points and 7.7 rebounds on 44.2 percent shooting from the field and 31.1 percent three last season.

The Nuggets were able to secure a meeting with Millsap on Friday and met with their top target Saturday in Atlanta. President and governor Josh Kroenke, president of basketball operations Tim Connelly, general manager Arturas Karnisovas, coach Michael Malone, and shooting guard Gary Harris were all present. Also at the meeting were several Denver Broncos players who pitched the city of Denver to Millsap, according to Moore.

In Millsap, the Nuggets were able to reel in their biggest free agent signing since Antonio McDyess in 1998 and respond effectively to Northwest Division opponents like Minnesota and Oklahoma City who bolstered their rosters this summer by acquiring Jimmy Butler and Paul George respectively.

After striking out on draft night in a three-team trade that would have netted Denver Kevin Love and other rumored trades that could have brought Butler or Eric Bledsoe to the Nuggets, Denver was able to deliver on Millsap after the Phoenix Suns and Minnesota Timberwolves reportedly slowed their pursuits.

Millsap will team with the 22-year-old Jokic to form one of the league’s most versatile offensive frontcourts and add to the Nuggets’ already elite offense. The forward brings more veteran leadership to Denver’s locker room and the Nuggets hope that the 2016 All-Defensive Second Teamer will bring some intensity to that end of the floor as well. Denver finished last season with the league’s worst defense and Denver’s front office has said on multiple occasions this summer that addressing their issues on that end of the floor would be a priority this summer.

Now, Denver turns their attention towards consolidating their roster. The Nuggets could look to move forward Kenneth Faried, who’s minutes will take a significant cut with Millsap assuming Denver’s starting power forward spot.

The Nuggets could also focus in on free agent point guard George Hill, who they’ve reportedly inquired about, sharpshooter Bojan Bogdanovic, or look into bringing back swingman Danilo Gallinari, who Denver is “very interested” in re-signing, according to multiple reports.

However, that could change with Millsap on board.
