Oak Point Golf Course, a par 72 championship track designed by Clyde Johnston, sits right on the Kiawah river (above) and Haulover creek.
The playability and difficulty of this course earned a 5 and 4 flag review from us, respectively. Starting with a par 5, if you hit a good drive off the tee you could find yourself in a situation to go for the green in 2, although water all down the left side with an alligator sunning itself by the bunker presents some literal danger. If you pull your tee shot onto the driving range like I did, there are trees guarding the second shot that force you to hit a pitching wedge over them to roughly 150 yards out. Overall, this is a good test of golf that will really force you to hit all kinds of shots. If you’re used to playing at altitude, you might want to grab 2 extra sticks on each approach shot- the loss of distance at sea level is no joke.
Views at Oak Point are amazing, for roughly 2 holes (9 & 18) earning a 3 flag review from us. The Kiawah river sitting behind the par 3 9th and running all along and cutting out in front of the 18th green are great to look at. Most of the rest of the holes you’ll find plenty of trees and little ponds- and plenty of alligators.
Course conditions out at Oak Point were second to none and earned the full 5 flags. There are few brown blades of grass and no stone is left unturned by the maintenance crew on this extremely well manicured golf course. Each morning a crew goes out and fills ball marks on the green with a mixture that allows them to grow back quickly and roll smoothly when people don’t fix their ball marks.
We awarded Oak Point 2 flags in the value category. Our 18 holes with a cart set us back $165 each on a Friday, but being a prominent resort course with lots of demand they can get away with it. 3 double transfusions, a bloody mary, and a 6 pack of Truly’s set us back $120, which was also fairly pricey. As I have said before, paying much over $100 for any round of golf better be an absolutely unbelievable experience.
Facilities earned a 3 star review from us. A very small Proshop and clubhouse didn’t really fit the “Resort” bill. There was a sizable driving range, putting and chipping greens, but when you show up hungover 5 minutes before the tee time you have to head straight to the #1 tee and get going.
All in all, Oak Point was a great golf course to get to play on a vacation. The 70 degree day definitely beat the 25 degrees it was back in Colorado last Friday.
