Bettis throws 2-hit CGSO against Giants, Rockies win 6-0

DENVER  — After a disappointing series over the weekend against the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Colorado Rockies got the bad taste out of their mouths with a 6-0 victory against division rival San Fransisco Giants.

Chad Bettis made one of the best starts of his career, limiting the Giants to just two hits in a complete game shutout. It was only the 14th complete game shutout for the Rockies at Coors Field in franchise history.

Bettis was in complete control, striking out seven while walking none. Unfortunately for him, Mondays’ terrific start only brings his ERA down to 4.88 on the year.

The Rockies did all of their damage in the third inning, loading the bases with no outs for DJ LeMahieu to drive in Cristian Adames on a sac-fly. After Nolan Arenado was intentionally walked, Carlos Gonzalez let out some of his recent frustration with a grand slam, giving the Rockies a 5-0 lead.

Two batters later, Nick Hundley hit a solo shot that scored the games’ final run.

The Rockies chased recently acquired starter Matt Moore from the game during their six-run third inning. Moore had put together some quality starts since joining the Giants, including coming close to a no-hitter on August, 25, but the Rockies had no intention of allowing his string of success to continue.

This team just continues to tantalize with how good they can be at their best. Which also keeps happening right after they lose against teams they have a much better record than.

Still, a game this dominant against a big dog in their division has to give the Rockies confidence. And they are going to need it if they are going to surprise anyone this season which looks like it will require a 2007-esque 18-game winning streak

2 – There have now been two complete game shutouts from Rockies pitchers at Coors in which there were only two (or fewer) hits allowed. The other was Jeff Francis in July of 2006.

6 – Carlos Gonzalez recorded the sixth grand slam of his career and second of the season.

.467 – Raimel Tapia went 1-for-4, beginning his MLB career on a four-game hit streak. He is 7-for-15 which is good for a .467 batting average.
