Cincinnati, Ohio –  Chad Bettis had a rough second inning, allowing three runs on three hits, two of which were home runs. Aside from the second inning, he retired all 18 batters he faced. Unfortunately for Bettis, the Rockies offense couldn’t get it going early and they lost 6-5 to the Reds on a walk-off.

A leadoff single by Brandon Phillips started the inning. Jay Bruce would homer of the fourth pitch of his at-bat to knock in two. Adam Duvall followed up Bruce’s blast with one of his own giving the Reds a 3-0 lead.

A small rally in the fourth got the Rockies offense going as DJ LeMahieu hit a leadoff single for the club. His bloop was followed up by a run-scoring double from Carlos Gonzalez. Then a walk by Nolan Arenado really had the Rockies threatening with one out. Gerardo Parra brought home CarGo on a single and that brought up Mark Reynolds with two on still. He struck out and Ben Paulsen lined out to end the inning.

For a brief moment, it looked like the Rockies had tied the game at three in the seventh when Dustin Garneau rounded third on a Ryan Raburn pinch-hit knock, but it was discovered that Garneau missed third base, ending the inning and leaving the score at 3-2.

Bettis was taken out at this point for the Raburn pinch hit opportunity so Justin Miller took over. He retired two quickly but he then allowed three back-to-back doubles and the score was 5-2 Reds.

A base hit, back-to-back walks, an infield fly, a fielders choice, walk, double and a pickoff was the eighth inning for the Rockies, somehow that resulted in three runs for Colorado. The base hit was by LeMahieu once again starting the rally, they’d get the bases loaded with no outs after walks were issued to Story and CarGo. With one out Parra brought in a run a fielder’s choice ground ball to second base. But big Ben Paulsen got the big hit sending home two with a two out double and tying the score at five. Reynolds got picked off third to end the inning.

Christian Bergman came in for the ninth, he allowed a leadoff single to Phillips and Bruce followed up with a single of his own that moved Phillips to third. After a quick strikeout, Tucker Barnhart walked it off for the Reds on the first pitch he saw with a single to right.

TURNING POINT:

Dustin Garneau‘s would be tying run in the seventh, where replay confirmed the Reds appeal that the Rockies backstop did not touch third. Garneau was running after Raburn got a hit, pinch-hitting for Bettis. At that point, Bettis had retired 15 straight and the ensuing bottom half of the inning the Rockies allowed two runs.
