Avs-Canadiens grades: Time to call 911

MONTREAL – Let’s not waste any time here, let’s just get to the grades and get them over with:

Gabe Landeskog (D) – The Canadiens might have done the best job of any team all year on the Avs’ top line. I’m not sure I recall one good scoring chance for Landeskog or his two linemates, and I don’t think I could say that at any point this year. He tried, but the results just weren’t there.

Nathan MacKinnon (D) – One shot on net, lost seven of nine faceoffs, part of an ineffective power play. Bad night.

Mikko Rantanen (D) – One shot on net, bad puck-possession numbers (13 Corsi events for, 24 against). I don’t think hockey can be judged on a spreadsheet, but it’s bad no matter how you slice it for Mikko tonight.

Alexander Kerfoot (B-) – He came close a couple times in the first two periods. He might have been the best Avs forward tonight, which, well, never mind.

Colin Wilson (C-) – Only played 9:45 in his first game back from injury. Managed two shots on net and worked hard, but, right, there’s a theme here, no results.

Tyson Jost (C) – I thought he skated hard, and he had three shots on goal. But the puck stayed out of the net. He’s a good kid and you root for him, but the numbers keep staying below par.

J.T. Compher (C-) – The puck’s not going in for him right now either. Seven games without a goal. He had two shots on net, and three that missed.

Carl Soderberg (C) – Four shots on goal for Carl and some physical play out there. He was a minus-2, though his puck-possession numbers were decent.

Sheldon Dries (D) – Only played a bit more than seven minutes, with 2-12 Corsi numbers. Not good.

Matt Nieto (D) – I don’t remember a single thing he did all night. Not trying to be snarky. I just don’t.

Sven Andrighetto (D) – Eleven straight games without a goal for Sven 10. No shots on net tonight.

Matt Calvert (C) – No points, no shots on net. Decent puck-possession numbers, though.

Erik Johnson (B-) – Had four shots on net and was a little more physical than usual. Played more than 24 minutes.

Sam Girard (C-) – His shot has just been a little too soft lately. He’s gone 20 straight games without a goal now. He shouldn’t be running the second PP unit anymore. Give Erik Johnson a shot.

Ian Cole (C) – He crushed a Habs dude with an open-ice hit. Unfortunately, that was his high-water mark for the game. Bad puck-possession numbers (10-20). He did block four shots. So there’s that.

Tyson Barrie (C) – Not terrible, but he is a big part of the power play and right now the power play is awful. Gotta move the puck with more pace on the PP.

Ryan Graves (C-) – Well, he wasn’t going to get an A in all of them. Didn’t play with the puck much. Blocked four shots at least.

Mark Barberio (D) – Bad puck-possession numbers (12-28), was on the ice for one of Montreal’s goals. Tough way to come back from injury.

Semyon Varlamov (B+) – That first goal on him was a bit of a softie, but he made lots of good saves overall and gave his team the proverbial chance to win. This one wasn’t on him.
