This is a fantastic breakdown! Whether you want to trade him or retain, this analysis gives a good idea of what to ask for in return, what you are losing and what it would take to replace him. I’m in no hurry to move on, but be fine with it if another team values him highly enough to help us with our 2C role or other needs

Great read AJ!! One of the things I was wondering about was his health at the beginning of the season. His broken sternum kept him from doing his normal conditioning over the summer. That led to him starting the season behind the rest of the team. Plus the shortened off-season didn’t help. I’m not complaining because the Cup win was wonderful. He has been much better since the end of January. I think his conditioning is where it needs to be.
Cheers!!

A well researched article. Sam is exactly who I thought he was. A legit 5 million per season 2nd pairing player. Could be paid slightly less, but quite worthy of his contract. His defense is decent, his offense is decent, he’s small, but is a great skater and moves the puck well. His shot is less than great, but he can put points on the board. As a smaller d man, he’s one of the best. He’s a lot better than Tyson Barrie defensively and much better skater.

He’s actually the best puck mover out of own zone of that entire group of close to salary guys like Slavin and Theodore. He’s the best skater of them, imo, so what that means is, he fits a role better than all those guys for us. But he certainly is not a net front presence, it’s why an EJ or a Manson are around for.

The split in scoring and +/- in March is expected because of injury to Manson and EJ getting back recently. Playing with Bo, it is expected that the offense could go up and defense slightly down. Simply, Sam needs a big RH dude so he doesn’t have to try as hard to post up a power forward, which is not his game. Bo is not a pure stay at home role, so it follows those two playing together aren’t the greatest fit as a pairing.

Sam’s been a jack of all defensive positions this year as a PK and PP player. He’s been quite durable, playing second most games to Toews, making him invaluable as a consistent blue line presence. He has skill, and it isn’t elite, but it isn’t out of place, and those who put him down don’t watch him without some sort of he’s too small bias.

I think you must be getting some polarization over Sam, so seeing you cater comments to what I perceive is Sam hate made me wonder what compels you to have to do this. Sam’s fine, imo. He is who I thought he was before and after reading this article.

Eye test in my view is that Girard is the one who gets asked to switch sides and switch partners constantly depending on who is in the lineup. I’d be curious to see a breakdown of those numbers depending on his primary partner and whether he’s playing left side or right. And in the part of the season when he was -12 was that when the bulk of the top 6 forwards were out and he was on the ice with a lot of non-finishers?

Bottom line is I’d love to keep him but if one veteran Dman has to go to keep them under the cap then he’s the most logical one based on salary vs production and role

I was surprised how many “killer mistakes that are fairly punished” showed up in the assembled goals video, as I don’t think of Sam as terribly prone to killer mistakes. But I also saw lots of near misses (maybe he should get a Draisaitl blade on his stick), and lots of Sam all alone defending two on ones (or worse). Also several where he was out high when the puck went in the net, which I know is part of the Avs semi-unconventional defensive pattern, but makes you wonder. Finally, he had a few really, really bad games. It seemed like he was on the ice for multiple goals against in the same game several times. That adds up, and it’s a chicken and egg proposition whether he was victimized by the team collectively pooping the bed, or vice versa.

AJ, good analysis of Girard”s play. I think the Avs are just in a place where you have to take the good with the bad. Lots of times where you see him get out worked by bigger guys that are frustrating but also LOTS to times where you see him skating the puck out of the d zone to relieve the pressure. I do see him as being a trade piece in two or three years depending on choices the Avs have to make and if Berhens or Malinski can become comparable replacements at ELC contract values or starting RFA contract values. I will be curious to see how it all plays out.
