Wow! LOTS of info with stats to back it up. Great article, although it kinda reflects what my thoughts have been. Some back luck combined with some crappy plays that may have been caused by gripping the stick and lack of experience, leading to a lack of confidence overall.

Interesting… and great article…. great research.

I’m wondering, however if this approach isn’t a bit too granular.

I wonder if the stats can somehow be used to measure the chemistry of various lines.

I often hear AJ rattling of the stats of any given single player, but the whole is more than the sum of the parts… the fact that Miko, Landy, and Mack are now teamed with other team mates with skill sets that match their own creates at least three really strong lines whereby Miko, Landy, and Mack not only elevate the plays (and stats) of the Josts, Kerfouts, Svens, etc on their lines, but having three strong lines instead of one becomes harder for oponents to deal with.

In other words, chemistry is not just atoms, it’s combinations of atoms forming mollecules, compunds, etc.

I say this respectfully because the stats in this article are super interesting.
But I still wonder if there can be stats that measure the chemistry, i.e. the efficacy of the various line combinations.

I have a question about this quote (which was made in reference to years ’08-09, ’10-11, ’13, and ’16-17): “Yet one glaring difference separates this campaign from the rest: none of those other seasons had problems so specific.” My question, in a nutshell, is how do you know? This feels like a starkly qualitative judgment to make in a piece that takes such a deep dive into the numbers. Have you analyzed the data from ’08-09, ’10-11, ’13, and ’16-17 in a similar fashion to what was done for this piece? If the answer to that question is yes, then I would be interested in hearing more about that analysis: what you found and how you reached your conclusion. If the answer is no, then I’d say I wonder if you looked at the numbers from those previous campaigns in as much detail as you did for this season if you might uncover specific things that were the core problems in those seasons as well.

Overall, great piece!
