Fantastic article AJ!
Your articles seem to be getting better and better all the time. Mind you, they’ve always been good… but they’re still getting better.
Thanks!

I would way rather have Barrie, Duchene, and O’Reilly than Compher, Zadorov, Girard, Kadri and Kamenev. Although Byram alone will hopefully swing it in the other direction

But the point is you don’t have just those 5 guys. Your list is missing Bowers, Greer, Byram, and Rosen. That’s cherry picking to some extent, no?

I’d rather have a cup contender for years to come rather than three pretty good players.

I still can’t believe Sakic got away with that trade. He completely made his team better and accidentally set the Ottawa Senators back a decade. And he gave up one guy who didn’t want to be here. It’s still amazing he got all that done.

Actually I thought Duchene did leave most of the fans with many Memorable moments. It’s too bad that group was saddled with poor coaching, clueless General Managers and inadequate defense.

Duchene trade was a heist, but tough to argue this team isn’t better off with ROR and Barrie. We wouldn’t have had to trade Barrie if we had kept ROR as our 2C. Salary cap would be a nightmare though. Lot of good young players on cheap deals from these trades gives us a window…

Duchene was a bit too much me first. Barrie is not a good overall defenseman, and I doubt we could have won a Cup with him, taking a top role. ROR had the salary problems, and we had to keep to a strict salary structure. All 3 helped us out of the PL days doldrums, but them getting traded was necessitated to make the team and organization better, able to now compete for the Cup, with the Barrie flipped.

Prefer quality analysis like this to “breaking news”…ROR and duchesne would never have won a cup in Denver…quality players but didn’t fit in and when the going got tough cut and ran like the Italians in N Africa in WW2…we are better off w/o them…will miss Barrie getting crushed on the end boards though
