I say yes, though i don’t miss the guy I do think he played a huge role in the new era! I remember watching him and Sakic together thinking it was like a passing of the torch! he made some of the worst years as an avs fan bearable! but towards the end a sad way to go but necessary

He is a quitter and sad sack. And even though no one will outright say it, seems like the locker room dynamic was f’d up because of him and his attitude. No video.

I think it would be a nice gesture, but don’t care either way. I really hope that the fans don’t boo him at all.

I don’t think he should get a video tribute. Maybe just a public address announcement welcoming him if anything but that’s enough. I’m not really a Matt Douche-ene fan. I kinda view him as a selfish person/ player. I think he and RoR created a toxic environment with all of their contract BS. I’m glad all of that is over.

It would be the classy thing to do. This organization actually owes him a lot. We could thank him for being traded so we got Girard and the rest of the gifts that keep on giving. Without that trade we would not be where we are today!!

I don’t like Matt Duchene because of how his attitude dragged the team down for so long. But he did do some incredible things while he was here.

Although looking back … Adrian – Do you remember that article you wrote about him when he signed his second (I think?) contract with the Avs? He came in to sign and the Post had that picture of him wearing a Vail hat and you wrote about how this kid gets what it means to be apart of this organization and being a Coloradan.

If they want to make an in-game announcement where the fans can cheer, fine. I just don’t really know what a video tribute would memorialize.. Getting bounced in the first round twice? Getting roasted by Roy after his 30th goal celebration? Fact is, demanding a trade was the best thing he ever did for this franchise and not just because of the return. The culture of this team completely shifted after he was out of the locker room. It’s probably on the Avs for propping him up as the face of the franchise, but they have one of the top 5 players in the world and it’s not an issue with Mack. 9 is not a leader. He’s the guy that points fingers when faced with adversity.

I say yes. Even if it’s just a short stick tap. He played 8 years here and I never questioned his work ethic. He could’ve sat out the beginning of last year but he showed up even when it was the most awkward situation I’ve seen in hockey lol. Give him a video! Then kick thier ass.

I say give him the tribute and put some heart into it. There were a bunch of years here when he was the only real positive for us to point to. He was a great story for the Avalanche and he continues to provide us with talent through the trade. Ottowa screwed up big time but they wouldn’t have considered it if he wasn’t a very good player. My daughter has a Duchene Jersey. The fact that the ending was ugly is easy for me to overlook.

Yes, and here is why. The Duchene trade was a seminal moment for Avs fans, and a turning point for the organization. Remember what a bum everyone said Joe Sakic was before that trade? Remember Duchene signing that contract in the Colorado hat and shirt, and believing himself to be the Avs’ poster boy while the team he represented missed the playoffs year after year? I think a Duchene tribute would give the fan base and locker room some closure on that era. It would also show that the Colorado Avalanche are a first-rate organization, and that the Pierre Lacroix era of holding grudges and crucifying guys over arbitration and contract holdouts is over. Showing class would be a stark contrast to what Duchene must be experiencing now in that dumpster fire up in Ottawa… All the people in this thread with the “fuck Duchene” stuff are probably the same people who talk all sorts of shit about their ex girlfriends after a breakup, right? Give him a video, so we can all move on.

Yes. But not for him. For all the fans the shelled out the cash for his jerseys. I don’t wear mine anymore but lots of other people do. It might justify the money they spent when he was the shining star in the organization to see the good times.

My opinion is yes give him a video tribute. It kind of makes me sick that some people here make stuff up and say things that are untrue when the full truth is unknown. If you don’t like him just say “No. Because I don’t like him.”

Duchene was the face of the franchise for the majority of his time with the Avs. And he gave everything he had on the ice for most of it too. I think he definitely deserves to be recognized for that.

There’s no doubt the end was bad. But I think a lot of folks who feel he quit on the team may be having lasting nightmares of the 48 point season when everyone on the team threw in the towel at some point.
As for the folks who are pissed because Dutchy wanted to move on & asked for a trade, I just don’t get that kind of attitude at all. He quit on the team, really? I highly doubt everyone with that mindset has never changed employers.

If it wasn’t for #9’s dedication coupled with his talent, the Avs wouldn’t have gotten the massive return they did for him in the trade. And I have not seen or heard one person complain about the trade return.

Yes. Give him a tribute. He always remembered the fans and thanked them. He played to win while he was here and was often the best thing on the ice. Who cares what Johnson thinks I’d rather he concentrate on staying healthy and winning this year. That would be more valuable than some comments about Duchene

Take the high road, play a nice little 30 second clip. Show his stats and franchise scoring ranking and a pic of him wearing an Avs jersey as a kid and win the damn game.

But I always felt like he cared when he played here and did right by the fans. So no need to boo him either.

The question is: Who would the tribute really be for?
The fans? Or Duchene? or the team?

If for the fans, it serms only ablout 50% or less of the Colorado fans like the idea and would like the gesture and need the closure.

If for Duchene, I’m guessing he has mixed feelings as well, but he was clearly ready to move on and probably only wants to look forward not back from here on out.

If for the team, very few who played with him are left and of those only a few have positive feelings.

Therefore, given this sport is essentially entertainment, I’d say go 50/50 and split the difference and give him a quick and highly paired down tribute, maybe only his picture for ten seconds when he comes out and a sentence telling him thanks for some good years, satisfy those parts of us and parts of him that still care, wish him the best, then move on.

He should and he will. Everyone needs to get over themselves. Duchene stood by this shit show for his whole career. At the time, this team looked like it was about to go through a massive rebuild, I’d have asked for a trade like he did also. You can’t spend your entire career not making the playoffs. He made a move (that didn’t work out) which he thought would put him into contention. Who wouldn’t do the same? Give the guy a video and show some damn appreciation. We have a good team now, why be bitter at a guy that stood with this mess longer than he needed to?

Yes, to me the tribute is as much a reflection of what it means to wear that jersey and be part of this org as it ever was as a thank you to the name on the back of it.

The more the org does for its players past and present to more total value it creates surrounding all things Avs.

I have loved all things Avs since gm one when I bought a Sakic Jersey after watching warm up. But things like the treatment of ex players alumni events, Steve Moore, Hejduk (until recently), ex fighters, the draft pick concussed by Brayden McNabb and not heard of until recently..that shit matters.

I wear an Avs sweater with pride, but acknowledge that this would be one more op to error on the side of honoring anyone who had the privilege to wear the jersey. To me you’re sayin as much about yourself as you are Duchene.

I also say give him a short tribute. It’s probably natural, but I think we Avs fans suffer from a little bit of selective memory when looking back on the situation. The Avs as an organization had been pretty bad for a while before the trade. We signed Brad Stuart when he was old and slow and then extended his contract before the season started. We had a guy named Greg Zanon who played significant defensive minutes at one point. Ryan O’Reilly without signing his contract and then agreed to an offer sheet. Gosh, it was tough to be an Avs fan sometimes. I do remember that Dutchy was one of the few positives we could hold onto during those seasons. And remember: once upon a time, he did work hard for the team, he did want to be here, and he did have the right attitude.

By the time the trade happened, the organization had subtly been on the rebound for a little while. There were improvements from the Sacco and Roy years, even if it wasn’t translating into W’s at that point. It’s probably easy to look back and place a lot of blame on #9. The Avs were bad and Duchene gets traded and now they’re good. But I feel like that is missing the bigger narrative. Dutchy’s trade just gave the team to the pieces to make the hurtle out of bottom of the league. He did get sour at the end, and that was unfortunate for all parties involved. But he wasn’t the reason the Avs were a bad to mediocre team.

Give the guy a small tribute. It would be a good capstone to his time with the team, what he meant to the franchise and the fanbase, and the passion and work that he once did bring to this team. Let’s not be a vengeful franchise. It’s never been a good look for a fanbase.

It’s a tough call, I do think he will get a tribute, and I think that’s probably for the best. If it were up to me…. ya I guess i’d Give him one, but I’m not going all out like the retirement videos. Just something short and nice. Show the fist pump on draft day, show the first goal, the playoff shootout clincher, and then that’s about it.
