I like this move. They were always going to have to move two of them (Compher, Donskoi, or Graves) this off season for cap reasons, and this was probably the best return they could get for any of them. Now the Avs only have to count on Seattle taking one of the other two and then all of a sudden negotiations with Landy and Grubi get a whole lot easier. Hopefully Maltsev and the pick can turn into good players over the next few years. I like Maltsev’s size, and it looks like he has some good skills, if he plays to his size then I think he will find a good home in the bottom 6 for the next several years.

Good move
Only gets us about $1.5m in cap space though with the $1.5m owed in bonuses to Makar and I think Jost
Our cap is $80m next year
Still need a $3m player out like Donny or JT and anything else we can off load to sign big 3

Sakic once again makes the right move here. I admit I felt a slight bit nervous about Landy before this deal, now I can rest assured the Avs will have the money needed to keep their captain, our captain.

Good Move by Sakic. An important one to keep the team competitive for the future. Glad we got something for Graves and shed his cap hit.

Good trade. The cap space obviously, and the pick, but I like getting cheap 4th line candidates.

Evan is going to have to find a new whipping boy though.

Great piece, AJ. This is two years in a row the speedy, skilled Avs are trading away their biggest D after losing to a bigger, more physical team in the playoffs… do you think that means they will over value size and “big bodies” in the upcoming draft? With Bednar’s desire for a Nemeth type guy, who else do you think they may target in free agency to be that 6th or 7th D, penalty killing guy assuming EJ is not back?

This is a nice job of Sakic making the best of a tough spot. Avs get something for Graves who was the best player they would have exposed had he not been traded. Avs will lose a forward they like, but whoever it is, he’ll be more replaceable than Graves.

I cannot imagine the Avs not protecting Jost. Finding a good 3C is not just a matter of using your guy who is hoping to get the 2C spot. It’s a specific role that the player needs to embrace and Jost has done a fine job of doing just that.
