Big fan. Love the mock, very fun. Can’t wait to hold it up to my face as we watch it happen ?

I know we want to giddyup and win a Cup, and there’s a lot of impatience with the development of the Avalanche, but I’d rather go with the better talent in Podkolzin. We still likely have to wait a year on whomever is drafted at 4, anyways, and in the long run, Podkolzin’s got the elite tools and some nastiness, which I love. I’d take Podkolzin if he’s available to us, for sure.

The journey to capture the 2030 Stanley cup continues!

Byram and Cozens have more pts in the WHL playoffs. Also given the Avs have prioritized skating as an ultra important feature to prospects especially high prospects to me Dach is the least likely pick, and would represent a huge risky home run swing. Cozens, Byram and Podkolzin to me are better fits, but if TSN is to believed Podkolzin is a slam dunk at 3, but a Chicago kid going to Chicago I can definitely see.

Avs have used top-32 picks on Jost, Timmins, and Kaut in the last three years despite their stated desire to add more skaters so the proof isn’t in the pudding that Dach would be the least likely of those guys. They’ve leaned more towards the skaters in the middle and late rounds than up top. Podkolzin would also be a solid fit but I just think in a draft full of relatively safe bets to make the NHL, why roll the dice with the one volatile guy in the mix? All of those WHL guys feel like very likely NHLers and Dach has the highest upside (imo) so he’s my guy.

Interesting call on Dach over Cozens! Well explained reasons but I would love to hear more. Do we also need a star defenseman staggered every two years given their long career length? My guess was no, but what do I know?

Thanks for doing this, I frankly trust your opinion more than Pronman, McKenzie et al. Pronman now seems to think this draft isn’t particularly talent rich after the first two.

My question is this: After the the first two is there even a chance any of Dach/Boldy/Cozens/Turcotte/Zegras/Krebs/Suzuki can help right away or is it basically a year wait on all of them?

I’ll offer an unsolicited opinion – no. Outside of the top 2, I think everyone else is a year or two away from joining the main club unless they show extremely well in camp and during a 10-day trial during the regular season.

You’re most likely waiting on all of these guys for at least a year. Dach could probably adjust to the NHL just because of his physical maturity but there isn’t really a reason to rush any of them like that.

Avs need consistent secondary scoring, size, and some physical players outside of Landy and Z. I’m thinking (hoping?) Patient Joe goes with Podkolzin at #3. I agree that the ‘D’ Corps is getting thin at the AHL level, and Soderstrom at 16 seems like a solid choice.

My “Holy Crap!” prediction: Avs take Byram at #4, Knight at #16 and sign Panarin and/or Skinner over the summer. Hey, a guy can dream…!

I had thought the same myself. The defense pool needs a restock as does do the Tenders. If Knight works out they should be set down the road and a high end defensive candidate a couple of years away from nhl level can keep the AHL ticking over. Forwards are easier to come by so the free agent market could be the key there. Or just hope to strike lucky on a forward in the later rounds

Your #16 argument is why I think they should go with Byram. IMO That is an actual “pipeline” guy. Let’s roll the dice on D prospects in the 2nd/ early 3rd rounds and snag Spencer Knight. Then hope that TB17 can take the next step and/or use TB4 and Free agency to rebuild the 2nd line.

Not taking Bowen Bryan at 4 would be a huge mistake. Take the best player available.

If Cole Caufield is available with our second pick you take him and run.

Byram isn’t BPA at 4

Hell yah he is. Turcotte at 3. Podkolzin could turn into the best player outside the top two, but there’s way too much risk while Byram is low risk. Dach/Cozens/Boldy/Krebs are all interchangeable and are likely going to be solid 2nd liners, but Byram looks like a top pairing dman.

Byram almost universally ranked at 6th on most lists. Not much difference (it’s nitpicking, as all of this stuff is at the top) but he’s not a slam dunk at 4. This isn’t a no-brainer decision
